    A lot of not too smart statements were made during the public comment period on the permit issue--pushing for a change in state rules to allow permit to be speared in state waters was a big mistake. Also, claiming that African Pompano are difficult to distinguish from permit was another mistake. Now, the commission feels they need to ban the spearing of African Pompano so no one accidentally spears a permit thinking it is an African Pompano.
    To my knowledge there has never been an active spearfisherman on either the FWC, Gulf or South Atlantic Councils. From the appointment process to the actual decision making--it is all political.
