On-gassing and off-gasing are a function of the gradient. That's true. But that is not the entire story. Other things effect diffusion. For example, how long the deco gas is in contact with the alveolar surface, the amount of surfactant present in the alveoli, the health of the lung tissuse (how well it is vascularized). Are there any A-V shunts? Is there a V-Q mismatch (ventilated but not perfused?). Etc.

By the way, no one has ever measured the efficiency of on-gas / off-gas physiology in vivo. It is all based on theoretical models. Perhaps, there is the possibility of deminishing returns. In other words, not much of a difference between 80% and 100%. Also, by using 80% (or 75% or 85% or 87%. etc...), you are able to start your decompression gas sooner in the deco schedule. Maybe 20 mins of breathing 80% is better that 10 mins of 100%.
