I saw this happen when a shot fish ended up on the shooting line (spear passed through) and a large groper took the fish and ran off with it. The trailing spear was on the reef and, as the groper ran, the barb hooked into the reef causing the groper to run down the line. As the knot with a burnt lump on the tag end, passed through his mouth the knot was undone. In this case it worked out for the best as the spear was easier to recover.

This is exactly the reason that prompted me to write the initial post. Many of my shots pass completely through up to the shooting line/reel line. I was worried that the loop on this knot could either catch a bone in the fish and pull it loose or even catch on some of the structure on the reef. Maybe I’m better off just using a pigtail.

If you want to part a line there is always your knife. Line is cheap, athough spears are not and nor are specialist tips, but sometimes you lose them as that is just part of spearfishing. After a big trip quite a few shafts can be left on the bottom as escapees get munched up or succumb in unknown locations after a brief flight to freedom. Have found a number of shafts on the bottom, but never my own!

If the loop hooks up and the tag end is pulled through, the knot is still there, just no longer a slip knot, will still hold fine. If it is too tight to undo, cut it off and re tie.
