$20, DIY, Four Gun, Rack Project

Over the off season (bugs closed) I wanted to make a speargun rack to keep the guns off the boat floor and not use a trash can barrel. I needed to keep it removable to still have access to mechanical/cleaning/etc. Mainly I bought a $10 square PVC 4x4 fence post. & cut it in 4 pieces.

Since it's PVC and the sides are flat, you can use purple pipe glue and clamp it up. That PVC glue is really strong if you clamp it hard & fast, none of them have separated yet. I did use some backplate nuts that I had, but honestly you don't need them. The tube will crack before the glue does. I also thought the fence post wall would be too thin, but it's plenty strong for abuse. You can stand on those fence tubes and they won't break. Just used a jig saw to cut the handle openings and then sanded smooth all the edges so it doesn't scratch the wood guns

Using some scrap, I cut some 4x4 wood cubes at a 45 degree angle and screwed them into the bottom of each tube. This not only gives a strong mounting surface to screw into, but also pushes or pinches the butt of the gun forward for more gun stability while in the tube. Drilled drain holes in the bottom also for easy washout.

I had some 1/2” thick PVC signboard for the base that I used, but painted simple exterior plywood would work also. On top of the base, I routed out a few shallow grooves and then overfilled them with silicone. This provides grip to the bottom of the cooler so it doesn't slide around. I also put some rubber feet on the bottom and it won't scratch the floor.

The cooler sits on top and since the rack is only on one side, you can used different size coolers. We usually have 40-50lbs of ice in the cooler so it provides the weight to stop any sliding. An empty cooler won't work so well.

Before I wrote this up, I wanted to wait awhile and see how it held up. We have about a dozen dive trips on it in all kinds of Jupiter weather (one in 7ft seas). It really stays stable ! If it's really rocking and no fish in the cooler, the cooler may slide a few inches. I guess you could add a bungie thru the cooler handle but its not really been an issue. The pinched guns are very easy to get in and out of the rack and no scratches nor falling out. The whole rack is very light to move or even take out of the boat. I originally thought about putting a hinge on the tubes so they could fold down to make an even smaller profile but just bolted it instead.

If you are looking for DIY economical, removable, boat gun rack, this one's hard to beat.

Very cool. Thank you for sharing.

PVC Cement actually dissolves PVC so you aren't gluing it so much as bonding (physical bond vs chemical). Those tubes will rip before letting go at the glue seam.

:thumps:

I see a winter project in my future!

I like the idea of a hinge. Maybe a couple of short bolts and wings nuts on the "open" side to keep things in place?

Great Idea. Thanks for sharing. I really like the overfill of silicon on the base to keep the cooler in place and the 45 degree blocks to stabilize the guns in the rack. Very clever! I will make one for sure.

I'm going to check the size of the square baluster and see if a pole spear paralyzer tip will fit inside it. If so, maybe clue two pole spear holders to each end.

Man your a quick thinker,

I was about to try pvc pipe. I can make one like yours, and bolt it to the live well in my cape horn.

Thanks,

Keith

I had the same idea except for the cooler part. I found two 3' PVC posts at HOme depot a little scratched for 50% off. I cut them into 16" sections. I'll post a pic when its done.
