Alaska (Anchorage) Spearfishing Partners

Hi I'm new to spearfishing and freediving and I live in Anchorage. Is there anyone on this forum from nearby? (or know anyone?) It'd be nice to find some partners and learn from the experience and wisdom of others.

Good luck in your search. Please let us know if there is a community up there. My graduation present in a few years may be to visit the diving community up that way.

I am really keen to know what you find. Keep this thread alive.

Last few times I went to Alaska (Anchorage, Homer, Seward, Valdez), I asked around at the fishing village, harbors, and DOW offices. They do not know anyone who spears but there is a guy in Homer that is willing to take me out for spearfishing trip but the expense is screaming expensive unless I find few partners.

I hope you find a community up there. I expect to go back to Alaska in 2013 visiting Homer.

There was a few diving charters back a long time ago here is a taste of it from just friends going out, as you can see as long as it was not too big you can handle it. Halibut Spearfishing - YouTube
Take a bucket and 3" from bottom cut holes in 1/2" size, put chum in then freeze. drop bucket with weight and wait a bit then go spear the one you want.

Haha! Good video. That halibut nearly knocked two guys off the boat. :)

After checking out that video, I saw this one Kodiak Spearfishing Boyz - YouTube and was intrigued, so I watched it. These youngsters are catching flounder and greenling by hand!

I was up there last August. Went out of Seward on my buddy's boat. The fishing was incredible. The water was clear and fairly warm, at 54*.

After taking my scuba gear all the way up there and renting tanks (expensive tanks!), I got in about 10 minutes of free diving. When I got out to adjust my hood and mask, I lost them in 200 feet of water. No spares.:bang::bang::bang:

Based on what I saw, I will definitely hit it again!

We had big silvers 5' under out boat. That's what I jumped in for. There are a lot of wrecks. We saw an old guy who was cleaning an outrageously large ling at Seward. I think that thing could have eaten a diver. Some of the better water appeared to be 50' viz or even better.

It's the promise land.:thumps:

Don't hold your breath, but if I'll try to put some video up from Seward. Gorgeous.

Yes, it is a CA halibut. I had an awesome dive when that pic was taken. Below is the sunset pic of that fish.

Halibut are one of my fav fish to eat. The CA halibut can be difficult to find sometimes, but not hard to spear. They are my favorite for the food quality.

And its my dream to spear the Pacific Halibut. I want that more than a big tuna. So - I'm trying to reach out to others who have been successful, so that I can save up and plan a trip.

Im on a med student budget for a while - saving my funds cuz I know it wont be a cheap trip! But it will be a trip of a lifetime.

So - I'm still in the planning phases. I am def trying to work out ways to cut as much costs as possible, research the dive sites, and line things up to maximize my changes of success.

Def looking to make friends up that way. And find captains who really know what they are doing. Any intel is appreciated. Its one of those trips where having several divers to help split costs is a very good thing.

You friends w/ Tyson Curtis, Josh? He's up in your area.
