I Touched the Pickled Pelican

Last week, Eric again graciously invited me out on the Pickled Pelican. This time, due to circumstances beyond my control, my wife decided that it was OK for me to go.

^ That is actually my finger, unless this activity is illegal?

^ This is my "Oh my heck I'm on the water" face. They say trauma-related shock makes people smile funny.

^ This is a beautiful porgy trying its worst to poop me into letting it go. But Eric's wife likes porgy I think he said. So bad luck for Georgie Porgy.

^ And then we encountered a disturbance in the Force and the trip was over. I vaguely remember something about a black portal to Hades with giant mottled-brown demons passing in and out? I think Eric took a video of that? But I didn't drink any water on Friday and I regretted that deeply on Saturday. Worst dive headaches ever! Still, felt fine on the bottom so that's no excuse for missing my shot on that gag...

^ Currently have no grill. Have fire pit though! Bought charcoal. Brought everything outside to fire pit. Spices, fish, butter, ears of corn, spatula, tongs, thongs, etc. Was ripping open the charcoal bag, heard thunder, saw black cloud, felt raindrops. Aborted mission, ran back inside. Watched rain pour down onto my empty fire pit. Resigned myself to oven baking the fish with a broil to crisp up a little. Was delicious!

Broiled Gag Grouper and Mangrove Snapper with Bonefish's Lime Tomato Garlic Sauce (https://cookpad.com/us/recipes/37634...o-garlic-sauce) and Garlic Mashed Potatoes - yum.

After these two meals, my wife asked me why I hadn't been spearfishing more? LOLCATZ

Thank you so very much for letting me pet the Pelican, Eric! :toast:

Great report. The wife is right, those Porgies are delicious. Pure white meat.

Not only is it great tasting, hearty, hits you in the soul, but it's supposed to be crazy good health-wise. The stuff that comes out of fish bones is some sort of miracle drug according to my wife. So that bodes well for future spearfishing trip permission.

Tell your #1 son that if he doesn't like it, he risks demotion.

P.S. - I endorse heavy cream instead of that wussy cop-out half&half.

Damn straight. I toss a pound of uncooked bacon into mine. ;)

Heck yeah that sounds great. I also want to try doing the same thing but with coconut curry, seems like it'd be great.

Great report. Does anyone know how many spearboard-dweeb attacks I’ve endured for shooting a few porgies?

Porgies are great! I've also been excoriated for shooting and eating huge Horse Mullet. They're great in foil with naval orange slices and onion on the grill. Just take what you can eat in one meal because they get mushy if you try to freeze them. Might work good in a similar fish stew!

Re: I Touched the Pickled Pelican

F 'em. Dinner is dinner and porgies make awesome fried fish fillet sandwiches and is a meat that keeps very well frozen.
I was raised on mullet. Fresh caught from clean water, bled, butterfly'd and thrown right on the grill is some of the best eating in FL, IMO. You can freeze them but really need to cut all the red out if you want them tasting good. Fresh with the red meat cut out and fried tastes better than Redfish, IMO.

Awesome report, and glad the Sherpa Stew turned out great - its a lot of work, but SO worth the effort and freezes wonderfully, and the fish stock freezes great as well.

Once I grilled Porgy and thought it tasted of iodine, compared to the other fish I grilled. Next time I go out, though, it's time for some target practice on grunts and Porgies so I can make more Sherpa Stew ®

You deserve one, too. No worries, I've got your virtual head covered in your video thread. :cowboy:
