Re: Help_Best solution to reconstitute screw holes?

Yup! I re-insert the screw when the epoxy is still soft, then just wipe off whatever squeezes out of the hole when the screw is tightened. The screw will be in pretty tight when you use this...

Dual Trolling Motors

Anyone have any experience using dual trolling motors on a catamaran to hold position while fishing? I'm considering using 2 gps enabled trolling motors on our custom aluminum cuddy dive boat. I'm...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

You also need to isolate all non aluminum fittings. I used nylon bushings between the aluminum tank and brass fittings. Be careful what fasteners you use for gauge brackets, etc. I used aluminum...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

If you build a support frame the livewell will be supported from underneath and can be replaced easily enough down the road if necessary (Assuming you can buy a replacement with the same dimensions)....

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

If the water in it is continually exchanged with a pump there is no reason to insulate it. If you want it to double as a cooler, that's different. I would frame a support for the tank, epoxy coat...

Re: How do you equalize when you have a speargun and a light?

I think you're making it harder than it needs to be. Mako sells mounts that attach the light to the gun, depending on what gun you are using, which is probably the best way to go. We usually tank...

Re: Wood pole spear? Dumb idea?

Good idea on using the slightly bent shafts! If you think about it, Polynesians have been using pointy sticks to kill fish for hundreds of years, so there's a lot of data out there on wood...

Re: Wood pole spear? Dumb idea?

I would score the shafts first with a cutoff wheel on a side grinder. Cut the two pieces to the thickness that will be the diameter I want, then I would rout the 2 end slots while the two pieces are...

Re: Weirdest damn boat I've ever seen

Looks a little like the unlimited hydroplanes that raced back in the 60-80's. They had 2 sponsons attached to a single hull- wide at the bow and tapering toward the rear. Fast as hell- 200+ mph...

Re: Advice on repairing an epoxy track?

Probably teak, but the pics aren't clear enough to see the grain, so it's a little hard to tell. Look for where the ballasting is because that will give you an idea where and how much it might be...

Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—

Really nice job, Charles. A shop full of tools makes building a gun so much easier, but, as you've shown, simple tools will also work- if you have the most important one. PATIENCE! You certainly...

Re: Nose heavy roller

How buoyant is the gun without the shaft? If it's buoyant enough, you can consider adding weight to the
butt to offset the nose heavy muzzle.
What does the muzzle look like? any pics of it?

Re: Could Giant "Solar Rigs" Floating On the Ocean Convert Seawater To Hydrogen Fuel?

As Ben Franklin said: "One of the greatest tragedies of life is the murder of a beautiful theory by a gang of brutal facts."

A lot of technical issues could be eliminated if the units were located...

Re: The Return of the Aluminium Speargun

Yup. Put another way, the bands will deliver a bit more energy to the shaft since they won't become fully relaxed due to the preload. RG's aren't magic- it's still about band modulus times stretch,...

Re: Fishing/Spearing in April in Pensacola area?

I would suggest Dive Pros in Pensacola for air fills and tanks if needed, and they can put you on the lionfish as well. There are lots of public sites in Pensacola Bay as well as near offshore that...

Re: Spearfishing in mobile by dog river marina

Not sure what they are talking about. We didn't have any significant affect from hurricanes this year. They went west and east of us.

Re: Spearfishing in mobile by dog river marina

Spearishing dive trips are also available through Dive Pros dive shop in Pensacola, FL. There isn't much in the way of spearfishing shore dives since it's a little far north for coral, and the...

Re: Maple, Hickory, Walnut

I haven't stained any wood for guns myself, although I've used colored plywood, which of course is just stained before it's laminated. I love the look you can get when shaping the wood shows the...

Re: Is This quarter sawn teak?

Crazy grain and color for teak. I'm no expert, but the grain and color aren't like any teak I've ever seen. Hard to tell from pictures since reflected light often changes the color things appear to...

Walnut and maple. That's a combination you don't see every day- can't wait to see how it looks, I'll bet the rich colors and grain are going to be really something! What kind of finish do you plan...

yup! It's like you took the words right out of my mouth.

Re: Roller Build Help

Seeing the bands on the gun might be helpful. What are you using for wishbones? On earlier rgs that I made i tried using brass balls to hold the wishbones, and the brass balls just tore up the band...

Re: Maple, Hickory, Walnut

Any of the woods you mentioned would need to be totally encapsulated with epoxy, which is no different than most woods other than the naturally oily ones, such as teak.
Maple's spgr would be ok,...

Re: A few laminating questions

I would not thicken the epoxy since there will be a lot of joints, and all that epoxy could make the blank pretty heavy. I would make the joints as thin as possible, just be sure there is squeeze...
