Re: Anatomy of Free Diver Death

Lets not jump to conclusions here, especially when relatives can be hurt by comments. That is why there are separate memorials and diving safety forums. Diver found wrapped in gun line. Doubtful he...

Re: Tool to cut yourself out of kelp quickly?

Not to be a naysayer, but I'm gonna go down as being against the idea of a knife 'retainer'. For starters, it wouldn't work strapped inside my calf because it would hit the other leg. Anywhere else...

Re: Tool to cut yourself out of kelp quickly?

One issue when shorediving is surge. It can roll you into/under kelp and roll kelp around you as well. Low tide is particularly hazardous since the kelp can mat up on the surface. It may be that no...

Re: Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara

Depending on water levels, you might try Lake Cachuma.
45m is a depth where you will need both:
1. professional training along with plenty of experience
2. a dive buddy similarly qualified
or:...

Re: The Other Side of the Conception Coin..

Maybe a dumb question, but could you put them in an old barbecue grill with the lid shut to charge?
Another dumb question: should we be using eye protection/welders gloves etc. handling these?

Re: Rare Baby Orca is a Headscratcher...

Was lucky enough to see some orca on a nitrox cert dive. Pretty cool.
Nah. Just a lot more contact with humans and the odds go up. Think white shark - how many attacks? Negligible in the wild,...

Re: Launching/landing a kayak in a mpa

I would def. call UR local office and explain what you wanted to do before trying it. Most of the biologists are cool but the wardens can be real jerks at times. Write down the recommendations and...

Re: Trigger Mechanism Design Rules

Popgun: So what would you consider to be the optimum design goals of a speargun trigger, in order of importance?

Re: Fire on the Conception

Nope, had you been following you would have seen that the Coast Guard specifically recommended emergency action on lithium batteries and chargers as a result of the accident.

The other...

Re: Fire on the Conception

I was talking about muzzling gov't workers by making regulators liable. As an example, I had a close relative, a smoker, die from lung cancer. Now ask yourself - who is it that makes the most money...

Re: Fire on the Conception

I think the issue is batteries dispersed in a jet vs. batteries lined up in the galley. If one pops the others can join in.

Regardless, I think responsible NTSB execs could and should have...

Re: Fire on the Conception

So the people who really need to go to jail are the bureaucrats whose job it was and is to update regulations to match advances in technology. It only took one walk thru the sister ship for the NTSB...

Re: Fire on the Conception

So are YOU in compliance? Do you have a Kidde fire extinguisher with a plastic handle? You may be in violation of CG regs. I got a free replacement from Kidde.

Re: Fire on the Conception

Unfortunately eviscerating the dive boat industry will just lead to the extinction of spearfishing in CA, already well on the way with the MPA's and etc. If I was a crew member, traumatized already...

Re: Boat safety in lieu of the fire

I give a safety rundown to all passengers beginning with asking what is the most important piece of safety gear onboard a boat?
The answer might surprise some of you. It is the anchor.
First, when...

Re: Fire on the Conception

Haven't been able to find any reference to a propane fire, but it would fit with what we know so far. Propane is heavier than air and sinks, thus requires flammable gas detectors within a few inches...

Re: Trigger Mechanism Design Rules

You apparently were trying to put more band tension on the trigger mech. Making the speargun longer will get more velocity without putting more band tension on the trigger mech if the bands are sized...

Re: Trigger Mechanism Design Rules

Thanks for the info on the bands. My Biller is from a long time ago and the wishbones were sharp, round ones will not fit (still have the shafts with pin upgrade).

Re: Is there a way to retreat a stainless shaft?

Oddly enough, zinc coating will destroy a stainless shaft thru corrosion. Zinc 'sacrificial' anodes protect regular steel by developing a voltage such that the zinc corrodes instead of the steel....
