Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

Thanks man. My dad worked 14 years as a plastic injection mold maker out of high school. He would always joke to people, "I taught him everything he knows, but I didn't teach him everything I know". ...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

Painted the helm chair parts today. They came out great. I'll reassemble tomorrow using red locktite on all the fasteners and take it to my upholstery girl for cushions.

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

I got the pins welded on today. Waiting for some more sex screws and then I'll prep it for paint.

Ran out of mat and resin again so I got more supplies on the way so we can button up the lower...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

Forgot to update here from last week.

So I didn't like the OEM backrest and armrest brackets. They were cut pretty thin and made from 3/16" aluminum. Seemed a little too light so who knows the...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

So, we've had a few days this year the weather warmed enough to lay up some glass. The plan is to finish the cabin, some odds and ends, and then start fairing, then gel coat everything, then put on...

Re: Tethering Shark Shield to the tip of fin w/o drilling hole in fin?

If you want a marine adhesive that won't come off you should use 3M 5200. You could then attach a piece of plastic to hold your loop of bungee/mono.

It will be a bitch to get 5200 off, but with...

Re: Tethering Shark Shield to the tip of fin w/o drilling hole in fin?

What if you just bought a fiberglass driveway marker rod. Home Depot sells them for a few bucks. Cut the reflector off and bungee or zip tie the Shark Shield tail to the rod. This would all but...

Re: Tethering Shark Shield to the tip of fin w/o drilling hole in fin?

Can you post a pic of your fins?

Silicone tape is literally nothing more than a stretchy silicone in tape form. It does not have any adhesive as it seals on to itself by stretching the tape as...

Re: Tethering Shark Shield to the tip of fin w/o drilling hole in fin?

Try silicone tape with a loop of mono on the edge of the blade to hold the tail. The tape would be stretched tight around the fin so no noise. It shouldn't slip off and it's easy to replace when it's...

Re: Tethering Shark Shield to the tip of fin w/o drilling hole in fin?

Just spitballing an idea, but perhaps you could just tie some thin shock cord, elastic webbing, or line very taught around the fin and simply slip the SS tail down and under the cord. Maybe a small...

I am glad I had the opportunity to meet Ray. I spent some time at his house in August 2016. He was welcoming, as if he knew me for years, showed me around his place, sharing stories, newspaper...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

They're for an entirely different market than your 25 ft and under boat market. Everything in the marine world is priced stupid right now, though. Those poor saps carrying $100k+ 10 year loans on...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

Yes, cosmetically, the powder coatings tend to fail as the aluminum pits. Fortunately they won't be exposed to the elements 24/7 and I won't have to buy a $2,200 chair I would still have to modify in...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

They are made from aluminum. OEM parts from other boats. Pretty cheap considering the cost of helm chairs. A hell of a lot cheaper than paying someone to fabricate the parts. An equivalent chair,...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

So, the cold weather we've had the past few weeks has pretty much halted any laminate work. I'm hoping for some warmer weather to get back at the build. In the meantime I've been acquiring various...

Nice. Free usually solves purchasing decisions. Nice job jsbecauz.

I'd weld some tabs like mentioned before to keep divers from slipping off. What's your plan for non-skid?

A few ideas...

Re: Project Boat Discussion: Tips, Ideas, Mistakes...

No doubt. Since seeing you, Dan, Jaizzen's projects I've opened my eyes to what a boat hull could become. I'm pretty sure I'll do a bigger project one day and a big offshore racing hull will be at...
