Re: San Juan DeFuca Info

Pretty much. Not sure where the line starts for R/F take but all of Puget Sound is closed. They are coming back well. Saw a number of large and super gravid copper r/f yesterday (but no lings)...

Re: Netarts and seals

Years ago I was working at Santa Cruz island and a male seal lion was nosing around for the 1st two dives. I decided to swim in the mid water back to the boat and he's doing big circles around me. ...

Re: pregnant lingcod

Yep. That's why they close fishing season during spawning season for them in WA. Each time you take a nest-guarding male (the smaller dark ones with scuffs and scrapes on them there in the middle)...

pregnant lingcod

It may be a slow time of year for spearing but it is a busy time for lingcod. Peak of nesting. I was on a starfish survey in Puget Sound today and came across a 31" super-gravid ling. She'll lay...

Re: No ab season in California 2018

Yep. Looks like they decided to postpone a decision until March and close it until then.

No ab season in California 2018

I didn't check the Cali board but suspect this is already widely known. Feeling better I made my trip last summer.

Re: San Juan DeFuca Info

Yes. Hein, Eastern, Partridge are all diveable on the right tides. Never tried Coyote. It's deep (I hunt at 80' over a 90' bottom) and pretty neat. Not very productive as they get fished so hard...

Yellowtail rockfish in Puget Sound

It's not unusual to see a YT RF in the sound, but was came across a huge school of little guys (4-6") the other day in the North Sound. I started counting by clumps of 10 and estimated between 900...

Re: 66lb halibut jaw mount

This is terrific. I think ling jaws will hold up just fine. I have found several from lings dead on the bottom and they hold together well. A new quest!

Re: "Rockfish Explosion"

I was in Winter Harbour (Quatsino Sound) in August and the clouds of juvenile rockfish were unbelievable. Lots of them in the bellies of both rockfish and salmon we caught. There were humpback...

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread

Thanks. It's not quite a deer or elk but far easier to clean and process. And I have found they are easier to stalk. When I start going on about chanterelle spore scent and approaching mushrooms...

Re: Good sized Shark in the Columbia

There was a news article, interview, and crisper video on this couple weeks ago. Looked like a GW versus salmon shark. Really cool to see them in the river and area.

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread

It's towards the end of mushroom season but found the largest white shaggy parasol ever today in perfect shape. 7" across and 7 oz. A feast.

Re: fall foraging

Yeah they are pretty cool. They find a slime trail of another slug, follow it, and eat the other slug from behind. They are quick (for a slug). Just checked Wikipedia and it says Navanax inermis...

fall foraging

I think foraging for stuff is part of how we are wired as divers. You never know what will turn up.

So what started as a quick "get some exercise and maybe a crab" dive turned into an great...

Re: Baby Bugs

anthropisces, Welcome to the PNW. It depends on your definition of success. I like diving, the thrill of the hunt, quick turn around time, and not messing with the boat. But I catch fewer in an...

Baby Bugs

I admit I have allowed work, visitors, and a renovation to limit my diving. But did manage to get my snorkel wet in a Washington lake last weekend and got some baby bugs (crawdads) for breakfast. ...

Re: A little salt to neutralize the chlorine...

How long were the powder blue matchsticks? They may be larval lingcod. Nesting season in Puget Sound is wrapping up, with some nests hatched out but the majority still being guarded by the males. ...

Re: Spearfishing in seattle area

Agreed. Not sure anyone spears in the sound this time of year. Plenty of people free dive for crab. It can be good at times if you work the outside edges of the eelgrass beds.

Thanks Max. Yeah, most people say "so you went diving in California and brought home... a rock?" But with two geologists in the family it is a battle for prominent space in the yard between the...
