Re: Weirdest damn boat I've ever seen

Looks a little like the unlimited hydroplanes that raced back in the 60-80's. They had 2 sponsons attached to a single hull- wide at the bow and tapering toward the rear. Fast as hell- 200+ mph...

Re: Advice on repairing an epoxy track?

Probably teak, but the pics aren't clear enough to see the grain, so it's a little hard to tell. Look for where the ballasting is because that will give you an idea where and how much it might be...

Re: SKOGSTA, the Ikea speargun…1st build, few tools—

Really nice job, Charles. A shop full of tools makes building a gun so much easier, but, as you've shown, simple tools will also work- if you have the most important one. PATIENCE! You certainly...

Re: Nose heavy roller

How buoyant is the gun without the shaft? If it's buoyant enough, you can consider adding weight to the
butt to offset the nose heavy muzzle.
What does the muzzle look like? any pics of it?

Re: Could Giant "Solar Rigs" Floating On the Ocean Convert Seawater To Hydrogen Fuel?

As Ben Franklin said: "One of the greatest tragedies of life is the murder of a beautiful theory by a gang of brutal facts."

A lot of technical issues could be eliminated if the units were located...

Re: The Return of the Aluminium Speargun

Yup. Put another way, the bands will deliver a bit more energy to the shaft since they won't become fully relaxed due to the preload. RG's aren't magic- it's still about band modulus times stretch,...

Re: Fishing/Spearing in April in Pensacola area?

I would suggest Dive Pros in Pensacola for air fills and tanks if needed, and they can put you on the lionfish as well. There are lots of public sites in Pensacola Bay as well as near offshore that...

Re: Spearfishing in mobile by dog river marina

Not sure what they are talking about. We didn't have any significant affect from hurricanes this year. They went west and east of us.

Re: Spearfishing in mobile by dog river marina

Spearishing dive trips are also available through Dive Pros dive shop in Pensacola, FL. There isn't much in the way of spearfishing shore dives since it's a little far north for coral, and the...

Re: Maple, Hickory, Walnut

I haven't stained any wood for guns myself, although I've used colored plywood, which of course is just stained before it's laminated. I love the look you can get when shaping the wood shows the...

Re: Is This quarter sawn teak?

Crazy grain and color for teak. I'm no expert, but the grain and color aren't like any teak I've ever seen. Hard to tell from pictures since reflected light often changes the color things appear to...

Re: Maple, Hickory, Walnut

Walnut and maple. That's a combination you don't see every day- can't wait to see how it looks, I'll bet the rich colors and grain are going to be really something! What kind of finish do you plan...

Re: Roller Build Help

yup! It's like you took the words right out of my mouth.

I would definitely lose the brass balls on the wishbones. That's what is tearing up your bands. Go with knotted wishbones and you'll get...

Re: Roller Build Help

Seeing the bands on the gun might be helpful. What are you using for wishbones? On earlier rgs that I made i tried using brass balls to hold the wishbones, and the brass balls just tore up the band...

Re: Maple, Hickory, Walnut

Any of the woods you mentioned would need to be totally encapsulated with epoxy, which is no different than most woods other than the naturally oily ones, such as teak.
Maple's spgr would be ok,...

Re: A few laminating questions

I would not thicken the epoxy since there will be a lot of joints, and all that epoxy could make the blank pretty heavy. I would make the joints as thin as possible, just be sure there is squeeze...

Re: A FAKE Lost at SEA? Lost sailors did not activate emergency beacon

So much of their story lacks credibility. They supposedly bypassed several Hawaiian islands because they claimed the draft on their boat was too great (One of which was Maui!), then set out with a...

Re: pieces for blank laminating

You can stagger them most any way, just try to get the grains opposite when comparing two adjacent boards. Adding length by putting the pieces end to end is more problematic. I guess I would put a...

Re: Project boats

It's true, it will run cooler- cooler than it was designed to run. They are there for a reason, that being to make the engine run at it's optimum temperature.
Taking the thermostats out will...

Re: Wishbone insert

I haven't used these, but when I used a brass ball with a hole in it with soft wishbones, the ball would slam into the muzzle at the roller and damage the ends of the bands. I would think these...

Re: Butt Pad Ideas... mold rubber?

This is where I got mine, but it is available from many other sources. A 6" x 6" piece will do 4-6 guns, depending on butt size.

Re: Butt Pad Ideas... mold rubber?

Here's an approach you might want to consider. I've used on the last few guns I've built, and I like it a lot. It lets you finish the gun without marring the edges sanding the pad to fit the stock,...

Re: My gun developed a warp. Any ideas?

What's age got to do with it? If restoring the old blank doesn't work, you can always try "plan B". All you've lost is some time and a little bit of epoxy. Some of the best guns I've made have...

Re: My gun developed a warp. Any ideas?

My suggestion would be to first hang the gun vertically for a couple of weeks. Next, plane the sides straight, then route out the existing track parallel with the sides and re-pour it, then cut a...
