I used to guide in the FTM area but never did any shore diving. Stop in Dean's Dive Center (or call them) and see what they say; Brent and Scott are both big time spearfishermen.
There are some decent places to go but most of the are too far for a shore dive. Lower Matlacha pass is loaded with oyster bars and fish. Current gets pretty wicked at times though. Charlotte harbor has some small wrecks and rubble (they are on the charts). All hold snapper, black drum, and sheepshead. Grouper are closed till April and cobia won't make an appearance until late March.
Vis is best in the winter but 20 feet (inshore) is the best you can hope for and you'll be lucky to find that. One final note; Watch out for the man in the grey suit...he makes frequent appearances along those oyster bars.
