I did suspect it was the “balloon” or bladder as it is called in composites construction. This internal bladder is pressurized to help compact the layup and set it fully in the mold during curing and it’s not entirely uncommon to leave it inside. Super lightweight structures like racing bikes normally don’t leave the bladder inside but on a speargun the slight weight increase doesn’t matter.

It was hard to tell in the previous pics but now the bladder is out how would you say the laminate looks? Is the wall thickness even? Any bulges or obvious voids?

And congrats on finding the courage for the modification. Maybe more will be doing the same now:-)

Plugging the barrel should be easy. I’d make sure the bladder was removed and then make a small plug with some foam perhaps and then either pour in a bit of fiber filled epoxy or even glass in a few layers of cloth.
