Re: trigger fish

Queens are legal in Fed waters, meat is a little different but equally delicious. The fish around a boat are likely spades.

Re: trigger fish

I shot 490 lbs of fish yesterday and kept only one fish for my self. A very nice size trigger. Gags, Cobes, Mangos, etc...never keep those. Triggers are the best. FWIW...I filet mine like any other fish, but I use a thinner, sharp knife. It goes right thru 'em. I've heard of using boxcutters, electric knives, etc...Just filet it like a sheephead or mango. Easy peasy!!

Re: trigger fish

They're super good, however, even better are filefish. They're also in the leather jacket family, but easier to clean. Very easy to shoot with firm, white, mild meat. Way tasty!! Both are a good time on pole spear. Unicorn filefish just became legal in state waters as of the 1st of the year. Better than snapper, truthfully!

Re: trigger fish

Those triggers that come up to the boat usually aren't the gray triggers everyone is referring to. Opinions may vary but I don't think they are nearly as good.

Re: trigger fish

Grey Trigger for breakfast? HELL YEA!!
Fry some bacon, use the grease left to fry a couple of eggs. then saute onions, garlic, green pepper, yellow pepper and maybe a chili pepper of choice with the same bacon grease. once you have it nice and hot put your trigger filet in it and finish cooking the veggies with the fish. Serve eggs over the fish and ENJOY!
You are welcome!

Damn! That recipe sounds good!! I like using an electric knife on triggers but thats just my preference. You can use the skin for sandpaper if need too. LOL

Based on location, spadefish but there are a few oceanic triggers offshore.

Re: trigger fish

Triggerfish are great eating. I've started leaving the skin on and grilling the skin side down. Give it a try.

Re: trigger fish

Cleaning trigger is easy once you get the hang of it. I use an 8" boning knife (forschner). Put the knife in where the fins are and work your way back on both top and bottom. Knife also goes in easy around the bone at the trigger. The tough part is from the trigger to the to the rib cage. My knife slides right thru it. Cut off. The filet and enjoy some Trigger & eggs!

Re: trigger fish

I tried the technique shown it the video and it was fast, but left a ton of meat on the carcass. I did my other trigger my standard way (sharp, thin knife close to the fins where the skin is softer and filet like any other fish) and got a lot more meat and was almost as fast. After you do a few, they are very easy to filet. No special tricks needed. JMHO!!
