Victoria, BC Spearos?

Been lurking for a while now, but picked up spearing this past summer and have been hooked ever since. Just wondering who is in the area of Victoria BC? I have always been out on my own and it would be nice to find additional guilty parties

I like Saanich inlet but sections 20-3 and 20-4 up past Sooke are more open wrt DFO regs... Tried at a couple of spots (near French beach) and the vis was piss poor or the surge was more than I wanted to play with. I have been surfing a few times to Sombrio beach and on a calm day there are a few beauty kelp forests I am itching to try out.

Was wondering where some of the locals like to scope out spots? I always look for rock formations on the edge of beaches... Transitional areas that have cover, depth and interesting topography. Then weather and vis permitting

Cheers eh!

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

Welcome. Between Beaver (lives in Victoria) and Samik you have some of the best spearos on the planet in BC. I'm sure there are others. I know Beaver has been out of the water for a bit with health issues but his posts are super informative.

Best of luck
Ken

Welcome to the board. If you have facebook there is a group called Westcan Spearos, it is a group of western Canadian spearos.

If you ever have the time I spend ALOT of time in the Gulf Islands and that is DEFINITELY worth checking out if you have the time. As for local Victoria spots I am not totally sure.

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

Thanks guys! Cheers, I will definitely check out Westcan Spearos.

SH3 I would love to dive the gulf islands. We may have to get something organized. How often do you head out? I will have access to a boat capable of that range by the end of the month and the gulf islands are high on my list... But a ferry ride is definitely doable and I am itching for new spots to check out!

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

Hey Camero, Welcome aboard! I used to live in Vic, 20 years ago (before I started spearin') & haven't been back to the island for a while. From what I remember, I think Sombrio would be an awesome spot! We used to get crabs from Oak Bay & prawns off the Sydney wharf.

Colin (Samik) lives in the OK & dives the N. island periodically. Get him on that FB Westcan group. If you're lucky enough to dive with Beaver, you'd learn a lot! I'm on walkabout right now. Let us know how it goes...

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

I've joined the WestCan group. So hopefully something will come of it. I've been keeping an eye on Sombrio for a mellow weekend with little to no swell. I am not as Brave (yeah I capitalized that, duders has cojones) as Kirby going out in the rough stuff in the break with that many large boulders around. Ha! PLus it would be rad to make a weekend out of it and camp on the beach

Beers, BBQ and fresh fish.... Dammit I'm drooling already!

The water's awful hard east of the kelp, so you'll find Westcan pretty slow lately. Hoping to do a few more Coast trips when it warms up, and I'm usually shooting carp daily when I'm at home. Take a wander to the Okanagan this summer, we'll get your shaft stinky.

Carp. Speargun shaft. Perverts.

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

Ahaha Nice Samik. You wouldn't happen to ride bike too eh? I raced downhill for about 15 years and the OK is a spot I have always loved to ride. Freshwater spearing has me interested... Might need to do a double header. Day on the bike and day in the water... Big BBQ in between And did someone mention perverts? What? No.... Stinky dee-luxe stinky? Ha! Sorry, bike humour in the spearo forum ha!

I don't ride pedal bikes, but have a street and DualSport motorcycle.

Freshwater can be fun, and I've got a few good local spots...

Whack 'em and stack 'em! You must have you aim down dead to rights after all that practice!

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

Hey, I moved to Victoria last year and spear every weekend normally, was a avid solo diver for a few years now, did a lot of solo shore around becher bay this year via bus transit at that! My dive partner has a boat, too cold now to be worth taking out, so we've been shore diving out past sooke. We'll take it out for cod and booty when the season starts again.

Get in touch, I'm always up for spearing we usually head out on sundays.

Oh yeah, I have my downhill rig here with me, but haven't taken it out for more than a cruise cause I'm always out diving instead!

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

Nick and Camero,
Glad to hear your Victoria guys are getting in the water up there. I was in Victoria last weekend for an underwater hockey tournament and really enjoyed the brief time I was there. Coming in on the ferry I was drooling at all the good rock structure you appear to have. Looked imminently divable. Maybe we can hook up next year when I come up for the tournament again?

Re: Victoria, BC Spearos?

The diving is great here! I moved out here from Vancouver just for the spearfishing.

Definitely let us know when you're out, I dive all year round. I'll be making trips down to Port Angeles to spear this year as well.
