Freediving Class/Help

I am pretty new to freediving. I have always spearfished but only go twice a year because I live in Minnesota. There are no FII classes near me the closest one is about 12 hours drive time which I will plan on doing sometime soon. I do charts almost daily (not in water). What would be some tips and advice to help me get better at longer holds? I would like to start with pool work but haven't for safety reasons. I don't have people to train with. My fiancé would help but is not experienced. FYI when I go on trips I have experienced dive buddies with me I don't go alone. Also would anyone know of any places to take a class in the upper Midwest maybe I just cannot find them?
Thanks guys
