The only tail I'm chasing in October
It started off as kind of an unplanned trip to the Island on my buddies 26' SeaSport, We originally went to mess around and take some photos.
We got a late start, but with oil slick conditions, the trip was short. made it to the island around 9am. I checked my first spot, the vis was hazy but doable and within 10min I had three spooky jacks come in for look, seemed like they had been pressured hard and bailed out quick. After 20min we left to check the other spot, the current was ripping up the island, as we set the anchor, I jumped off and had to kick hard to make it over the high spot where the bait was. Just as i made it over I saw a nice single working the edge of the high spot in shallow, I dropped and took a shot, the shaft hit the spine near the tail, so I landed the fish relativity quick. We spent another hour at the spot and i had a few schools pass through without ever letting me get a shot off. As the current slacked off, my buddy wanted to switch spots and take some pictures in the kelp, so we took a short ride another spot. The current was perfect, vis was stellar and with Bonito foamers everywhere i knew there was going to be some life around. I swam around with the gun for the first hour and only saw a couple schools of big boneheads. I bailed on the gun for the Camera... As i worked the edge of the bait, some bones came in along with a big slug below them! i was hyped, no more than 5min later a school of about 30 yellowtail came in i dropped and let the shutter fire in hopes of capturing this moment, I was stoked to find out i had some images of free swimmers and a fish on the boat. We took a couple more photos, pulled anchor and headed home. Grateful to spend another beautiful day on the water!

Nice fish, I was out there the day before and it was green and no kelp anywhere that I could find on the back side or north end of the island.
there was a school of yellows but I couldn't close the deal |
