Online spearfishng comp?
so i know theres the calico derby comp going on and i want to set up another similar one with cash prizes and possibly awars if we can get donations. something along the lines of the 5 biggest fish wieghed in over the next several months no more than two fish per species. any reccomendations for a points system? I think it could be a cool idea and when its over there would be some sort of banquet/ awards/ dive at a beach. If this gets good feed back im going to try and make it happen.

fooddiver, just be careful what you get yourself into. Something of this size would be very complex to manage without the proper setup and tools. |

Biggest issue is honesty... how are you going to get accurate results...

Re: Online spearfishng comp?
I think the best way to dertmine the biggest fish is to do weight + length combined for a total score !!!! that way you are truley taking the whole fish into consideration. cause what is a bigger fish a ling that is 42 inches long but only weigh18 pounds or a ling that measures 36 inches long but weighs over 30 pounds !!! As for weighing you can use a thrid party, like dive local dive shops, fishing stores.

Check out the first two attached pics... One is 34.5 inches and 25 pounds. Stuffed full of eggs... The other is 40 inches and 22.5 pounds. Totally spawned out and empty belly. I personally know which one I think is the bigger fish. Ling weight can also be greatly affected by if they have a full belly or empty belly. Does the fact that the fish just ate make it a bigger fish? See last two attached pics... Length is an easily measurable and easily provable (via pics) factor. Weight can change dramatically depending on how long it takes to get fish to scale, if fish was left in water or dry in a cooler, what scale it is being weighed on etc etc. IMO, every contest will have its pros and cons and some people will like some more than others. And that's cool cuz there are plenty of options for people to participate in ones they like, or not participate at all if they prefer not to. Just my 2 cents. Sincerely, Jim

Re: Online spearfishng comp?
A recent comp comes to mind, the fish were weighed in a bucket hanging from the scale. When the winning lingcod went in upside down enough water fell out of it's stomach to flush a toilet, lol. The bucket was weighed with the fish and the water and jokes were made about the possibility of the fish being held by it's gill cover over the side of the boat on the drive back.
