California Hole Hunting

Hey guys! I have a gatku 8 foot pole spear. Shot a couple fish with it, but missed some big ones due to problems with my float line. I know that the biggest fish are found in holes, and I think hole fishing would be perfect with the gatku, but I have no clue what type of holes to look in. Every time I look in one I only find tiny lobster, in between 40-65 feet of water in Socal California, Palos Verdes area. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Re: California Hole Hunting

While digging around in holes will produce big fish- a long polespear will severely limit your ability to get into the majority of holes to get a shot on fish.
Most our polespear shooting is over the structure, or in cracks.

If I'm only hunting inside holes I like a 60cm gun
If the fish are outside and in I like a 90cm gun
Polespears limit your shots in a cave

Pole spear will for sure limit the angles you can work.

Re: California Hole Hunting

For hole hunting PV a cheap 50 or 60 cm gun with a reel and a tiny light is ideal, you want something that will allow you to swim into an overhang or giant crack between boulders and then swing the gun around in the dark to look for critters squashed up folds or holes in the rock. On a great day you can see a bit without the light but you definitely want the reel so you can fire and then think concentrate on nothing besides a safe ascent.

I personally live for that kind of wreck/bottom hunting but there is a lot that can go wrong, could be tough for the recovery guys to find your body.

Check out our shorter Rob Allen's.

They're bomb proof and will take down anything you want in a hole.

Look for narrow cracks and holes that go way back. Jam your head as close to the hole as you can and look around all directions, giving your eyes time to adjust. Some very big fish will come out of very small holes. A good piece of rock structure may have several entrances and exits connecting a maze of tunnels. You can pull big fish out of very shallow water. Look for holes that face away from the surge. If you find a hole that produces a nice fish, mark it in your mind. There will likely be a nice fish there again and again.

Re: California Hole Hunting

thank you all for your advice! Will look for small cracks, or try using my friends tinny riffe (we call it the sculpin slayer)

Great advice here!

I wrote down some of my thoughts about hole hunting last year for another site I am active on:

Good luck!

Great info and thanks for the link Jim. I'm going to put some of these tips to use next time I'm in Baja to put a few more Cabrilla in the cooler!
