'Compatible' Batteries and the Conception Fire?
Found this enlightening info on 'compatible' Lithium Ion batteries and fire hazard. Turns out that replacement batteries sold by major online shopping sites (such as amazon, rakuten, etc.) that are listed as 'compatible' can pose a fire risk. This had to do with portable vacuum cleaner batteries, but the principle is the same for any LiIon battery. Typically, 'genuine' batteries sold by the OEM have charge protection circuits hooked to every cell. Most of the 'compatible' ones do not protect individual cells from overheating/fire. In the image, the thin conductors color coded red are protection conductors, the two thick ones on the ends are supply conductors. Obviously the listings are from individual sellers and the online sites apparently do not vet them very well.
Three of the four 'compatible' batteries shown in the image below were made in China. The fourth was from a 'local' seller but turns out it was sourced from China. The seller had some returns for 'overheating' but didn't apparently realize the dangers involved. This brings up a couple of questions: 1. Were any 'compatible' replacement batteries used by passengers on the Conception? (a check of their online shopping receipts could confirm this). 2. Could the major online site or at least the seller be held liable? 3. Could the Chinese mfg. be held liable?

Re: 'Compatible' Batteries and the Conception Fire?
The Chinese are so good at copying that they will print “charge protection circuit” on a battery that has none. I have seen “protected” 18650 batteries with no vents, so they are just the cheapest rubbish in a fancy skin. The real McCoy have two little pin holes at the edge of the positive terminal, but no doubt that will be copied at some stage. The Chinese can produce all manner of deceptions, for example 200 meter rated dive watches that are barely hands washing safe, yet this is printed on the dial and stamped on the caseback. They can and do make proper dive watches, but this blurring of standards, or no standards at all, hurts everybody.
Chances of successful legal action in China by foreigners would be close to zero. |

China isn't the only ones..Remember how Yamaha outboards got there start? They copied Johnson, exactly. Johnson lost there suit against Yamaha, International court is no friend of the USA. There was a casting on the motor that Johnson could document what it was for, Yamaha had no idea what it was for because Johnson had stopped using it for that part, didn't matter, nothing mattered.

The other issue of course is the cobalt from the Congo used for the batteries. Young children are forced to work long hours and die from mineshaft collapses, toxic waste, etc. They are called 'artisanal' miners to make it sound cozy. Of course Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and Samsung etc. only deal with 'reputable' mining agencies in the region, so I guess the artisans are just stacking it up for entertainment.

Just for those not privy, the same Congo mine system at Shinkolobwe provided all of the Uranium for the Manhattan Project in WWII. A sleight of hand trick pointed at Canada as the supplier with concentrations of Uranium in the ore of about .03% Shinkolobwe ore had a concentration of 65%. All of this was kept secret long after the war, and the US arranged several coups to keep the mine in friendly hands. Freelancers have come and gone, many dying from the radiation. Some of the info is still classified.

China is an atheist country. Don't ever expect integrity, morality, or honesty to proceed from an atheist country, or to exist in the products they produce. If it is made in China, I do not purchase it.
