Video: 6-14-20 ARS
Report copied from the viz thread, but here's a little video of Sunday. Good times for sure.
Ran out today 50 miles off St. Joseph Sound on a 23 bay boat. The east wind and all the tropical activity seems to be giving everyone a run for their money the past few days. Meh, f'ing send it! We ran out early to avoid the afternoon unpredictability. Seas were 2-3 ft and the bean bag chair saved my ass. Fortunately all of those magnificent storms we saw building stayed away. At 100 fsw I cleaned up on ARS on a cargo container. Cool dive as it was just a rectangle box in the middle of a sandy desert with a big resident turtle. A small opening underneath revealed the fish were held up inside, but their curiosity turned them into fillets as steel rained down from above. Chumming hook and line likely would have produced a boat limit, but after I started banging away on their buddies, everything began to get the picture, except the lionfish of course. No thermocline, viz was a clean 50 ft. Working our way back we hit spots in 80 ft. and 65 ft. Gags, Scamps, Hogs, and Mangos hit the deck. Viz held throughout the day. I did get dropped in the sand once, not a damn thing there, but what I believe was a small dusky right under me. I gave chase hoping it would lead me to some structure, seemed to be working until it turned around and headed back toward me. One of our crew got an arms length encounter with a fearless lemon. A poke in the eye wasn't enough to send it off, fish still came over the rail. Great day, cool new spots. Heading down to Marco Island in a few weeks, hoping to get a trip in out of Naples to slay. Meanwhile, hopefully the winds shift here soon. Looking forward to a fun summer. https://youtu.be/kCk9zg8I3_o Last edited by CuzzA; 06-16-2020 at 06:33 AM. |

Re: Video: 6-14-20 ARS
I see you are still pushing out good stuff. How's the new boat?
The technology and processing is so good these days I can slap a video of a days worth of diving together in an hour or so. One day we'll be able to mark clips with a button push to quickly find later. My camera can do that but it only works on their app, so pretty much useless for making videos. We're heading down to Marco Island next month if you want to meet and split a charter. Maybe get out with Bill at Naples Offshore. Never dove down there, but it looks fishy. |

MAKO has a new low volume go pro mask. I hated their previous one - it didn't fit me well. This new one is MUCH better. The other option is a head strap mount.. if you go that route, add a chin strap or you will loose the camera. 90% of the videos from my YT channel are shot from a head cam. You have adjust the way you move your head and look at things to get decent video, or it looks terrible.

Re: Video: 6-14-20 ARS
I use the XS Foto Panoramic GoMask. It is high quality. The three pane glass opens your field of view significantly. The camera mount is molded into the frame and made of 316 stainless steel. The side is tapped so you don't have to worry about losing the retaining nut. The head strap has a slick design that with a button squeeze can loosen the strap and then you simply pull on the two straps and a ratchet type action pulls the mask tight. It has a little bulk on the back for this strap, but actually is handy for protecting the back of your head should you accidentally set your tank too high. The silicon skirt is very soft and supple creating a perfect seal. Never a drop of water. Also pretty low volume.
I broke my first one. Called the company. The owner was shut down in California due to Covid, actually he himself was recovering from the virus, but still responded to my message. Once back in the shop he shipped me a new mask free of charge. Top notch customer service. Highly recommend. Mako is a great company too, I have no experience with their masks. |

i had the xs foto mask the gentleman spoke about but i bought it in clear ( thought it looked better than black) but it was a poor choice for me. the mask was super nice and fit well but the clear sides let the sunlight in on the way down it caused glare and i couldnt see the sgructure and fish as well. ill be getting another soon. but i am a fan of mako i love their fiber glass fins.... high quality and half the price of others. ill check the mask out now |

Re: Video: 6-14-20 ARS
I have not had glare issues, but my skirt is black as well. The design, IMO, is clever because they just shifted the strap connection points back to retain low volume and gain the field of view. I dove with my old mask earlier this year and hated not having the wider FOV. That said, a common complaint from clear skirt masks is glare. I'd bet the clear skirt played more a role than the side panes.
