Re: Current Vis Big Pine 31MM - Layton 72MM

I was there this weekend, vis was 30-40' oceanside. A LOT of boats going to the gulf for lobster. We found enough lobster for dinner, no more, but avoided most of the boat traffic. I would guess that much of the busyness will go away with opening done and school getting started in a couple weeks.

Actually there will be 9 of us - bringing down two 26' boats as well. Really hoping to do great on the spearing and lobstering

Very good friends, and my brother flying in from Seattle. Me and two others (husband/wife who used to live down there) are the only ones to have been down to the Keys.

Re: Current Vis Big Pine 31MM - Layton 72MM

I went out with a friend on his father's boat yesterday in the 7 mile bridge area. We rod and reeled the incoming tide on the outer reef and brought in yellowtail until the tide went slack. The vis didn't look too bad on the way in so my friend and I jumped in at a couple reefs in the 15' - 25' range. Vis was good to the bottom and we found a few hogfish and a couple mangrove to add to the total. A beautiful day weather wise and vis was good considering all of the wind that we have had.

Vis was phenomenal yesterday off Marathon. We hovered over reef in 80' of water and could see to the bottom. Even Hawks channel was visible down to about 25'.
We brought in 4 blacks, one red, and a mixed bag of yellow jack, mutton, and a few hogfish. It was a great day to be in the water.

I'll be down there Friday and Saturday with the family. We'll be shallow and N/E of Sombrero Light. I'll post a report after.

Its still choppy out and looks to remain so for another week. I have a feeling the visibility isn't going to be all that great compared to say 1 month ago, but probably settling down after hurricane matthew coming through the region.

Re: Current Vis Big Pine 31MM - Layton 72MM

Has anyone been out on the Gulf side lately. I am headed to Marathon Wednesday and dive shops are reporting bad vis in Gulf and good vis on Ocean side out deep. Just curious if anyone has anything different. Weather looks rough this week but this trip has already been postponed once. Going regardless. Thanks in advance.

Re: Current Vis Big Pine 31MM - Layton 72MM

Went out to try and dive for lobsters a couple days ago in the gulf and the vis was awful, wind is still ripping so I don’t see it improving any time soon. Not sure about the front side though. I’m in Big Pine

Re: Current Vis Big Pine 31MM - Layton 72MM

Hit a few spots along the reef from Duck to Sombrero. It was Flat as a lake and viz was amazing. Will be interesting to see how quickly it deteriorates when the wind picks up the next few days. Gunna be a sporty first week of Grouper & Hog season with 20+ MPH winds.
Cheers!
