Scallops?
Since abalone season is closed, was thinking of looking for scallops on our annual summer vacation to Fort Bragg. Question came up that with ab season closed, is it legal to carry an ab bar for popping scallops?

Re: Scallops?
As long as you don't come back with abalone I think you should be fine.

Re: Scallops?
I don’t know about the legality of carrying an ab bar but prefer harvesting them with a butter knife. Instead of swimming around with all those shells and a large bag I carry a small bait bag on my belt and use the butter knife to slip in the smile quickly and slice the button. I’ll bend the knife slightly so the tip curves up making it easier to scrape the meat away from the shell. Then I’ll swim up with the meat leaving the shell behind clean away all the guts and lips and put it in the bait bag. Once I’ve got my limit I’ll still be super stream lined and will not have added more weight.

Re: Scallops?
Boy, reading that, by strict letter of the law, DiverDave's method could be considered illegal, unless he can convince a warden that his butter knife is his dive knife???

Re: Scallops?
Interesting.... I don’t remember seeing that included in the regs. Oops. That said I’ll still keep the same tactic but switch to the dive knife and still leave the shells.

Re: Scallops?
I think you'd be fine either way. I'd like to see a warden in court with your butter knife explaining why it should be illegal when a dive knife or ab bar is legal...

Re: Scallops?
Don't need the ab iron and def don't need to to carry around the whole thing, shell and all. A narrow spatula (super flexible) and a small bag are all you need. Makes for quick work.
