PV Report - Point Vicente 2/28/09

Where: Point Vicente Palos Verdes
Time: 11:30 to 3:00 AM
Vis: 12 to 20 ft.
Waves: ankle to 1'
Temp: 56-58

Saw: Small Calicos (and 1 HUGE one), Sheep Head, Sand Bass, Opal Eye, etc.

Went out with Dave and Rob (nice to meet you Rob) for a fun afternoon dive.

Most of the life I saw was at the point by the light house where the rocks are. I caught a fair size Sheephead for ceviche, and Dave caught a MASSIVE Calico, congrats bud , we all should dive again some time soon.

Cool report. I like the step by step montage from kill to eat.

Thanks, I was hoping it would be appreciated. Your pics always look like they came out of a magazine, hard to follow

Next time, lets skip the swim and just enter at the point, we just need to bring some boots

It can get a little hairy up near the point even with minimal surf, going out is not so bad but comming in you really have to watch it. The rocks up toward the point are very unforgiving

I agree. Better to swim it on most days.

Re: PV Report - Point Vicente 2/28/09

I didn't mind the swim too much. It must've taken almost 45-60mins. to get all the way out there though. Oh, and regarding pics, I totally forgot to take any before filleting that monster calico.

We were wrong on the measurement though - it was only 21", but it was really fat. I got some HUGE fillets off of him.

I guess I'll share the story of how I got this one:

I saw a 13-14 inch-looking calico from what I thought was ~10 feet away. Turns out it must've been 15 feet away because as soon as I shot it, it ran FAST with my floatline. I thought maybe my speared fish had been taken by a shark or something. But no, he was just way bigger than I'd thought. Anyway, he holed up in a very odd way, ending up pinned sideways between two rocks. Only once I saw him did I realize what a toad he was.

-----------------------
Other life seen: HUGE Goat (second largest I've seen), 2 sculpin (one freeswimming, chasing a fairly long piece of shredded fish meat)
