Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Yea, I just finished a long walk down the beach with my wife. Water is mud out as far as you could probably swim, and the 30 knot gusts and 2' wind chop on the surface would definitely not make for very good conditions.

So let's see that video!

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Just got back from Santa Cruz Island, headed out early to get some campers off the island then got delayed and stayed a little later than we wanted, we got some nice racing stripes on the back of the boat. This is the most wind in a year, that I can remember.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Pretty much murky shore from Gaviota to Goleta. My dive bud got in for 20 chilly minutes of groping in under a foot of vis between the Fug and El Cap. Nice sunny wind blown day non the less.

There was a 2-3 yard wide strip of crusted oil and tar soaked sand about a 1/4 inch thick or more for at least 60 yards. It was so big that at first I thought it was just a dark colored strip of sand; it might be the most oil I've ever seen on the sand locally. It made me wonder if the oil slick at Dev last week was more wide spread than I thought.

You came back across the channel in this weather!

I checked the buoys at like 3 this afternoon and at E. channel buoy it was like 9' swells and avg period of like 5.5 seconds, gusting 33 knots. That's some scary sh*t to come home in, I have no doubt.

Racing stripes? Don't you mean "texture coating"?

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Ahh, memories of a day that seems so distant...

According to my log, the water temp was 56 degrees:

The date? LAST DECEMBER!!

What is up with this weather - it is mid-may and the conditions are colder and worse than mid-December!!!

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Yeah texture coating for sure, we were announcing over under wages on the boat on how many would get sick, at least the passengers were amused at first! We went out to get campers off the island that were out there for 3 days and then we dropped off our next load on the island, we don't take any day passengers out, yeah coming back across can be interesting. The trip out today was not as bad, but the south swell had it all mixed up on our way to Santa Cruz in gap of Anacapa, had a nice potato patch going. Water hopefully will calm down for the weekend, we are headed to Miguel and Rosa next week.

Anyone got an idea of what the vis might be like at arco island? Thinking about going tomorrow. Maybe Malibu but everything north of Dume looked horrible on Saturday. Should probably wait a few more days but what the hell.

Epic conditions crossing the channel today.

Still cold. 54.4 at Rosa. I'd like to report that I found some vis,but it was dirty.

Gonna be good again tomorrow!

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

my dad was out at rosa last sunday, said it was 51* average around the east end and up the front side. 54.6* is a pretty big improvement over a week. i'm hoping those 72* days from last august show up here pretty quick and stay awhile. that was some nice water, i got a few days of 30 ft vis on the coast. if we get lucky, this wind will blow itself out by the middle of june and things will be clearing up through july. i'm keeping my fingers crossed for a great summer of diving.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Had a great day on the water today, glassy and actual first sightings of the season of WSB for me up here, unfortunately no dive gear onboard today not enough time to play, good size fish 40lb range easily, lots of bait near the islands but vis is still murk. the location.....

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

I dove Mesa Ln. this afternoon from 3:30-6:00. I checked the viz at 1:30 and it looked very promising. By the time I finished at work and got out it had deteriorated to a VERY hazy 6-8'. I only saw some smallish rockfish and what may have been a large female sheephead (too hazy to be sure)no other gamefish seen. If you are going to try tomorrow I would recommend you go during the high tide since the low tide wasn't so good today.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Just checked Mesa LN. Viz is improving, but still hazy. I'd call it 4-6 feet on the inside, maybe better on the outside kelp. Color is definitely getting lighter and less murky, though.
