Re: Tanning fish skin.

Old US patent #4877410 has a method from an Italian tanner.

http://www.google.com/patents/US4877...877410&f=false

Also found this catalog which has a fish skin tanning mixture recipe in an inset box on one of the pages. I know zero about taxidermy, but this seems like a cool DIY project.

And this product

I would guess this, though if you wanted to use the skin for something like backing a bow this wouldn't work.

Re: Tanning fish skin.

I would suggest you call or visit any reputable taxidermist - they would certainly know the answer as to how to tan fish skin. My father had a huge brown trout mounted 25 years ago with its own skin used in the mount, and it looks as good today as it did the day it was mounted.

Re: Tanning fish skin.

They do sell many things to preserve skins including fish skins. But if you wanted to use it for a wallet it must be tanned. That is a long process. I have sold 100s of large alligator skins at the leather buyers auction in Orlando for many years, and they only want them in salt. Salt only keeps it until it can be properly cared for. I do know when they get them back, they rinse them well, and do a many step process to get them like leather. You could preserve them with borax and water, make a slurry of borax and water, not too thick, maybe a cup of borax to a gallon of water. When it is very clean, soak it in it. You could leave it in for a couple days. Take it out and position it how you want it. Then when dry you could use the glycerin thing to make it soft-maybe.. But, I would check out any good taxidermy websites for what you really need. They are very descriptive on what each thing does. I use a formaldehyde replacement for preserving fish skin, but it will be like a hard piece of plastic. You can preserve a lot of different stuff with the formaldehyde replacement, which is cheaper than the real stuff, and works just as good. And costs less to ship since it isnt a carcinagen.

Re: Tanning fish skin.

After seeing this thread a few years back I was extremely interested about fish tanning. Like most things I forgot about it until my girlfriend just texted me from South America saying she got me 'something made out of salmon leather'. I immediately thought of this thread.

I have found a few links that might help someone who wants to give it a go, I will have to try once I'm shooting fish again..

(This is the actual artisan that she bought the 'something' from)

My wife puts up with an awful lot. A bucket full of urine sitting around the garage might be past some line I don't want to cross...

Otherwise, it sounds great.

I'd bet there is a substitute to pee, but ammonia still stinks.

BINGO!

Re: Tanning fish skin.

Its been awile since the last post on this thread but ran into it on a google search and just wanted to throw in that while you can tan fish skin it looses its color. all turns grey. taxidermists have to paint skin mounts when doing fish just as they do with the beaks/bills and feet on birds.
