Excellent Trip Saturday July 21st.

What a great trip! We took the Donzi out after sitting for more than six months. I was more than a little apprehensive about how it would perform. The steering was stiff and the motors wouldn't idle well at all (not good pulling up to rigs) but all in all it ran pretty well. It was a little chunky getting out of Galveston but got better as the day passed and we didn't get a drop of rain. We hit several rigs out to about 55 miles and limited on snapper and got a few sheepies and some big dog snapper in the bargain. The best water clarity we had all day was 23 miles out. We had 6 total on board, 4 tank divers with three tanks each (Dave, Wayne, Steele and Mike) and 2 free divers (Chris "Carsonwild" and Me). MakoMike acted as divemaster and helped keep all the gear safely stowed and kept track of everyone's down time. The rest of the guys pitched in and helped make the trip as worry-free for me as possible.

The highlight of my day was nailing this nice snapper freediving on the first spearfishing trip on this boat, on the first dive down, on the first rig we stopped at, first time in a new wetsuit, first shot with a new gun.

Excellent Freediving Skills. Great Job! Oh, and I'm really starting to like your boat more and more. You still wanting to sell?

Steve, we all had a blast! You set the standard with that first snapper. I guess he realized how much you paid for that suit! I agree with Steele's assesment though, them snapper have been hunted quite a bit already, they were definitely gun shy. I think a good investment for me would be a battery powered dremel, that little file on my gerber got a good workout!

Fun was aplenty and had by all. Man alive am I feelin it today!

I have said it before, but thanks for the lift. I think Steele will post up his pictures and video sometime soon. If you have anymore, post up! Thanks for the memories!

Thanks again hoss!

Re: Excellent Trip Saturday July 21st.

Steve, Thanks for the great trip. I'm ready to do it again anytime. That Donzi got us out there FAST and painless. I might just have to take that off your hands. Below are links to the photo album from my camera, and some under water videos we shot on the trip. I usually don't get any under water pics or footage, because I am busy with the real task at hand. However due to a gun problem, I was able to get around to it. The footage was taken, by myself and mike. Not much interesting footage, but it is there for anyone who wants to check it out. No film critique needed. Also, I forgot to ask but, what were you yelling at mike?

The new gun was a Rabitech Stealth 130cm with a single 20mm Band. I had two spears, one flipper tip rigged double-wrap and when that snapper nearly took me for a ride I switched to my breakaway rigged spear and floatline. Even though I was freediving I think I had an advantage on the scuba guys. I was in the water first and down to the fish before they were all spooked. The gun is slim, tracks really well, shoots fast and very accurately. Yeah, I gut-shot that snapper but, that was my bad not the gun's, it was a snap shot at the limit of my breath about 40 feet down). I'm kind of rusty and 46 years old now and not the freediver I was when I was younger so having one big band to cock really helps when you've got a limited amount of gas in the tank. I really liked the fast reloads too. It's not a powerhouse rigged that way and I did lose a bigger snapper when I shot him in the head and didn't make it out the other side but, overall, in my limited experience it's an excellent gun for rig diving. Carsonwild and I are planning to build two guns, mine's going to be a bluewater cannon enclosed-track gun. I want to go out to the floaters and try for YFT's soon. Here's two more pics, one of me and the gun and one of MakoMike with some snaps. If I had it to do over again I don't think I'd shoot that jack, I shot him straight down through the head, top to bottom just knowing it was a bigger fish. When my breath hold get's a little better I won't be in such a hurry!
