Re: San Marcos
It's legal to hunt nongame fish - stay away from the bass and catfish. JLittle has written a lot on the subject. Search his postings and you will learn a lot. Earlier this year several guys did a float/hunt. You could probably do a search for San Marcos and find the threads on entry and exit. Most popular is by the university. Rodney did the float several times and will probably post an answer. During summer time, you will get a lot of attention with the tubers if you carry a speargun. I believe it is illegal to hunt in the city limits. This was also discussed in one of the aforementioned threads. Good luck. scott

Re: San Marcos
jumped in just south of 35 at some public park. We got out 6 hours down stream. There was a damn you needed to be careful for as if you were resting on a tube you could easily go over. It wasn't too bad of a portage, but still needed to be mentioned. I wouldn't hop in after 12pm as we did and it was getting dark by the time we were at the car. We could have shot litterally a hundread pounds of Carp or BAG (big ass goldfish) you can check TexasSpearfishing.com (check the pictures section)for the name of the park and locations on Google maps or something. We just found the first road to cross the stream after the park and got out there. It was interesting for sure. Take a SHORT 20' max float line with you, those carp can pull pretty well if you shoot some big ones, and more line just get's tangled in trees and such.

Re: San Marcos
Did you float with tubes and hop off when you saw fish?

Re: San Marcos
nope kicked the whole way. Tubes would have been in the way as there were fallen trees we had to swim under. I don't know if this is a common tube route that is cleared regularly, but there were 2 or 3 downed trees in the water and a damn we had to clear around. Plenty of fish though. I'm sure you could bring a tube, I wish we had something, maybe a boogie board or something because we were quite tired afterward.

Re: San Marcos
Meet up with a buddy at the exit spot load all gear into one car and drive to the spot you will get in at. If you don't have 2 cars its gonna be a long walk back.

Re: San Marcos
Stokes Park off of Cape Road....we got out in Martindale I think it was about 4 miles. Here's a website with some more info http://www.pecanparkretreat.com/sanmarcos.html Here's a link to where we got in at. San Marcos Parks don't allow spearing so I'd get into the water quickly while your there. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...6778&z=15&om=1

Re: San Marcos
Here's a page with links from where you get in at, and where we got out at.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...&t=k&z=15&om=1 you can't park right at the bridge, you have to park about 400yards or so away up river.

Re: San Marcos
rain will make it dirty, so you might want to wait a week or so after some rains, but it was pretty clear, but not crystal clear most of the way. Dropped to 6-10' in some places. I think a 75cm gun or 90cm gun would be perfect.

Re: San Marcos
Sounds like there might be some potential interest in getting a group together. How about the First Annual Great San Marcos Trash Fish and Incoming Texas State Freshman Women Round Up.
It is the first week of school. Lets set it up for next weekend. September 8th. Either Camp out the night before or the night after. |
