I've seen them on the sand when I drag them on shore.

Re: Shallow YT!

Was diving the protected area of La Jolla on friday and saw a yellowtail in ~6' of water. There are tons of huge tame calis in there too. It was pissing me off.

Re: Shallow YT!

10ft of water over sand in OC 8-10lb,

and 8ft of water over sand at ***secret spot at night, 6lbs

And also at SC Island in looking for Hali's, 15 ft sandy bay. Dad took shot and lost it... Easy 25lb fish

As my dad puts it; "FISH HAVE FINS, THEY SWIM"

Depth don't matter in my book

Re: Shallow YT!

Maybe 6 or 8 feet of water. Saw three very decent yellows, and already had the bands off my gun on my way in. Glad I had one on the stringer at least.

Re: Shallow YT!

2 forty pound fish in 6 feet of water at Clemente. I had just missed an average calico and they swam 5 feet in front of me with my shaft in the dirt.
They left as I reloaded my gun.

Re: Shallow YT!

Saw a small school in 10-15 ft a couple weeks ago chasing bait. Birds showed up and started acting funky right when the yellows briefly came through. Shitty vis and rushed surface shot = missed fish. Also seen rats in 8 ft of water

Re: Shallow YT!

Landed my first shoredive rat yellow in 8-10ft of water practicing getting my heart rate down and aspetto waiting for calicos and barracuda to swim by. It's awesome hanging out at the bottom watching cudas and then seeing a random YT come out of the school to check you out, before trying to head back to the school.

It reminded me a lot like when I first started spearfishing back in 2015 (with the exception of the visibility/kelp). I can recall not being able to properly equalize hands free and not knowing how to navigate through and under shore break, let alone keeping my calm before I shot fish.

I still have a lot to learn in terms of experience, but as of now I think I'm going to keep rolling with the sport; and remember...

BTW Thanks everyone for the support. I know that most of the troll threads that come up are poking at the peeps that are too serious, and I've learned to enjoy the ironic humor that @Leo and @Errin usually provide.

If you ever see a post by me that seems arrogant in any way, call me out. I try my best to be humble and keep an open mind, but do enjoy poking fun sometimes.

The biggest yellowtail Ive ever shot in 5-6 years of diving was in 6 feet of water right by shore. Oddly enough it was also the first yellowtail I ever shot (The one in my avatar)....Oh and it was right around this time of year so get the **** out there. Happens more than you think at the right time. Ive also shot my biggest halibut and sea bass within a few hundred feet of shore. All about putting enough time in
