Spear Fishing for the Beginners

I've been spearfishing for a while around the Hawaiian Islands, and I've been lucky enough to learn from some of the best fishermen. After returning from home after 10 years in the military, I decided to make my passion my job. With a saturated market in Oahu, I needed to work hard to make the green dollars that allow us to pay bills. So there I was in a copy shop making business cards in efforts to entice individuals to come spearfishing. The first year was tough... handing out business cards in Waikiki in efforts to get someone to bite. My first client was VISA. Then we started to diversify in our activities in order to stay afloat. We added surfing, flyfishing, stand-up paddling, canoe surfing, snorkeling, and lifeguarding. It's been working! Today we pride ourselves in teaching the basics of spear fishing. Not blue water hunting or the use of a spear gun...just the basics. Using a three prong we teach safety, water currents, rules, regulations, and technique. Tomorrow we have a spear fishing lesson at the Makai Peir with two new individuals. We will see what they can do with the three prong and aholeholes. www.keaweadventures.com

After an hour of diving at Makai Pier we found one Tako. Not bad! We had to throw it back...too small.

It was the clients that found the tako. It was also their first time spearfishing.
