Sea sickness

So ive been taking Gravol for sea sickness and it has worked for me in the past . But in past couple dive missions it hasnt worked at all, i spent all day vomiting and feeling extremely sleepy.

Is there anything on the market that non drowsy or alot less drowsy. Anyone with any recommendations, im already taking raw ginger with me on the boat to chew on.

Thanks

Re: Sea sickness

What is the active ingredient in Gravol? Ginger?

I use dimenhydrinate pills.

It works for me. Never felt sleepy.

You'll find this at the drugstore under many different trademarks.

Re: Sea sickness

Ive had good results with the wrist bands. Lately if its over 1 to 2 I take herbal dramamine and it has worked. Weed also works, especially the edibles.

Re: Sea sickness

Ask for Mechlazine, it's the active ingredient in Dramamine. won't make you drowsy. take it the night before for it to build up then before the day out.

Re: Sea sickness

If you can get a prescription for Zofran, which is not hard to do, you'll be good to go. Jsut explain to your doctor and he should have no problem prescribing it. Zofran is what is used on patients going through chemo. Its only like 10 bucks for 30 pills. I've used it freediving and thought that it would mess with my heart right, but I actually felt like I was diving better than when I dove without it. It also cures hangovers like magic.

To be more specific:

Dramamine original is Dimenhydrinate

Dramamine non-drowsy is Meclizine

Re: Sea sickness

Wrist bands, which press on the acupuncture point Pericardium-6, work well in preventing sea sickness. I use acupuncture at ST 36 and LV 3 for patients who experience sea sickness. The treatments effects can last up to three weeks

Re: Sea sickness

IMO, wrist bands are BS. They're a mind F. IMO, as soon as you understand what causes the sea sickness, then you have power over it.
For one thing, greasy food and dehydration are definitely your enemy, especially while smelling gas fumes.
Research the reasons for sea sickness. It's genetic to keep you alive. If you're prone to it, keep your eyes on something stable as much as possible...the land or clouds work well. Don't ever try to read something or tie up lines w/o having something stable in sight. Otherwise, you're just asking for it.
Like I said, research the reasons why. Once you understand, you can have power over it.

Re: Sea sickness

Prescription seasick patches, Scopolamine. Work excellent. And one patch is good for 3 days, which is good if you go on a trip or dive all weekend.

Eddie, I tried a Scopolomine patch once in 2001, and it temporarily blurred my vision terribly. I haven't taken anything for quite some years, but used to take Mechlazine Hydrochloride (50mg) , Dramamine II. It was sold as "Bonine" chewable raspberry tablets. I would take a razor blade and cut tablet in quarters, then take only 1 quarter, the night before. Nothing the day of the dive, and didn't make me drowsy. Also, used to always bring thick slices of ginger root with me to suck on. I don't know what happened, but haven't needed anything in years. I've had my share of "calling Ralph on the porcelain phone"! Just stick with it and don't let it discourage you. Some of it might be anxiety. The more good experiences you have on the water, and the more you build your confidence in your abilities, it just may disappear. Definitely worth hangin in there. I don't pretend to understand it all, but have spent some time researching it, and is often a mystery.

I think it's applied via douche in the morning before getting on the boat.

FWIW.. my mom swears by the wrist bands.. but I think it's a mind thing like someone said.
