Middle Grounds

Went to Middle Grounds from Clearwater last week
Long boat ride!
Only my second trip
Depth 90+ feet, 50’ vis, warm
Nice gag and snapper
Nasty shark experience - had to punch an 8’ on the head to get it to leave
Ate there lots of sharks on the grounds?
Any depth under 90’?

Re: Middle Grounds

Surprised you didn't get any hogs. Long way for a gag and a snapper. Further north, it gets a little shallower. But, not by much. 90'-135' range is standard depth for out there. You never know what you'll encounter out in the MG. Thanks for the report.

Re: Middle Grounds

Lots of sharks lately.

The northeast ridge is 85-110ish.

Get a shark shield. They work. There's a video somewhere on the internet where a shark ate one of those shark banz along with the bait.

Re: Middle Grounds

We had an hammerhead encounter 2 weeks ago and once the shark shield was turned on he took off like a bat outta hell.

Re: Middle Grounds

I have a serious question, no disrespect to the OP intended. That’s a very nice Gag!

Have the middle grounds been seriously depleted in the last 10 years? I remember when I first started using this forum and reading spearing magazines I thought the grounds were amazing and an area I definitely wanted to dive one day.

However it seems that of late I haven’t seen any post that have wowed me or would even have me think of driving that far to dive

Re: Middle Grounds

Worth going to see the structure and experience it but not going to be as fishy as it was years back. You have to know where to go and even then you will still have to work to find the fish.

Re: Middle Grounds

I think the Red Tide really hurt the grounds. I went about 8 years ago for the first time and it was incredible.

Taking a long time for the MG to recover from the red tide. Just search the old posts and videos from The Holy Spear-It that ran 2 day trips to the MG. The Jolly Rogers 2 did the same thing. A lot of us miss those days.

Re: Middle Grounds

Shot my Avatar pic, Hog Fish, 90' depth, in the Middle Grounds. 27" to the fork. Great experience! Didn't see many sharks, but we do carry the Freedom 7 Shark Shields. They are great! Especially for those sneak attacks. Wouldn't spearfish without one
