Favorite California Beer
I just heard of Ballast Point Brewery in San Diego. I went to the store and bought several of their beers(Sculpin, Big Eye, etc), which turned out to be great. Does anyone have any suggestions for their favorite California beers?

Re: Favorite California Beer
I saw Sculpin at a liquor store out here, I was thinking of buying it but wasn't sure. Is it any good?

Re: Favorite California Beer
I often enjoy most of the Firestone beer, especially their DBA

Re: Favorite California Beer
They carry Sculpin in both bottles and cans at my local Total Wine here in Washington State. It has really nice grapefruit, mango, citrus smells, with a descent amount of hops, but not overpowering. I thought it was pretty good. You should give it a try!

Green Flash out of San Diego is awesome. I haven't had a beer of theirs that I disliked.

Re: Favorite California Beer
Ballast Point is awesome. Anderson Valley in Boonville and Lagunitas in Petaluma are 2 other breweries I enjoy.

Re: Favorite California Beer
Can't go wrong with Sierra nevada, the Pale Ale is a Cali staple, and can be had nearly anywhere. Winter time they come out with Big Foot, you can sub those in for protein shakes, and they are really effing good.
+2 on the Sculpin, damn good...bit pricey. +1 on Lagunitas, their IPA is really tough to beat If you want something a little light try North Coast Scrimshaw... Not sure if Berryessa Brewing makes it up there, and I don't think they bottle, but if you see a tap with their name on it, don't hesitate to order up. |

Stone's Consecration, Cali - Belgique are top tier. Enjoy by: is also a good ipa each time.
Russian River's Pliny the Elder Lagunitas' Sucks" was a good ipa when the rep came up north to my local pub. |

Also forgot to mention that North Coast has pranqster and old rasputin and brother thelonius. All 3 are amazing. Actually drinking the pranqster right now. Phenomenal lineup. They are in Fort Bragg. Try it out and you won't be disappointed.

Re: Favorite California Beer
Well, Kern River Just Outstanding and Citra DIPA. Pliny from russian river isnt as good as it used to be, plus its stupid hard to get. Bear Replublic Apex is supurb. Hopstupid by laugunitas very good. Stone "go to ipa" session ale is good and their "enjoy by" ipa series are great. Green flash "citra session ipa" is the best sessoin ipa Ive had so far, and the "west coast ipa" is a staple for many. Firestone is overrated for a hop head like me, and for my tastes, sierra nevada does not make a good beer, trust me, Ive tried. Lets see, Coranado, Golden Road in LA, Alpine, to name a few more, oh yeah Heritic "evil cousin" evil twin" are worth while. The key to a good craft beer is freshness, and not just how old it is but how it was treated on its way to your glass. I can name a a few stouts too.

Re: Favorite California Beer
I'm an IPA guy so there are too many near SD to list.
Green Flash has the best selection of good beer by far. My favs are Green Flash West Coast IPA, Belgian style Le Freak, and Ballast Point Big Eye. Mission, Thorn St, and BNS breweries were other places i frequented. Any Pizza Port has pretty good beer and the best pizza!! I miss SoCal beer but Mpls has Fulton, Surly, and Summit - i can't complain. |
