Fear mongering by those whom never tried it for themselves.

There is a lot of that going around on this board.

Re: First cuda

Cig is concern but I only eat the smaller models so they have less lifetime to accumulate the toxin(24" or less. Used to be 36" but i was convinced to go smaller). The truth is, grouper or hogs are just are likely to have the toxin. Any big boss of the reef is a possible culprit

Re: First cuda

Cuda's not all that bad.

Why soak it in freshwater though? I have noticed that to ruin the meat on other fish. Osmosis is just going to pull moisture right out of the tissue if you do this.

Re: First cuda

Just bleed and gut it right away. Throw it in the icebox and chill it immediately afterwards. Cook it however you prefer but I like simply grilling on alum foil with lemon juice and a dash or garlic salt. Delicious...

rule #1: the teeth have right of way.

Here's a little one I shot a while back on one of the deep spans:

Re: First cuda

ANY large territorial warmish water predator can carry cig. OTOH Cig is most common in fish gathered from the SE side of any primary reef structure. (Kay Sal Bank, Bahamas Bank main islands etc.) Currents in the Caribbean and SE US will concentrate the carrying primary toxin source plankton predation in that sector of the reef structure. It's REALLY rare in a fish shot off the upper Gulf Coast. 'cuda is good if treated right. Gut it as fast as you can after gaining control. I prefer to gut it on the bottom or during the last stop if on structure that allows it, or on the swim platform or ladder if it doesn't. Then ice it down filing the gut cavity with ice, preferably in a chest reserved for triggers and 'cuda. Smoked 'cuda makes an awesome dip or sandwich. Jerked 'cuda is a good boat or hungry afternoon at the office snack.
