Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
In the early '80s I dove with a friend, John Bouldt, who I worked with at NASA Ames. We dove from prone paddle boards. I believe they were Mulder or something like that. I'm living in Florida now and travel regularly to the Bahamas with a mission group, Bahamas Methodist Habitat. I got to dive with some native divers who dive from shore using slings. They drag a cut down plastic drum to put their gear, fish and lobster in. They fish for a living, sell their catch to local restaurants.
It occurred to me that a paddle board would allow them to dive further from shore with better safety. So, I'm looking for an old style prone board, they seem to only exist in California. Does anyone know where I can find one to buy and ship to Florida? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gene Schmidt gene@sdace.com |

Re: Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
It's not a prone paddle board, but you may want to contact Mike about his boards. These are really awesome for diving/fishing.

Re: Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
Before I used a SUP I was using an old windsurfer board. They are a lot more heavy than what's out there today, but I got mine for free and put about $40 in plugs, bungee, and pads and had a killer set up. Look on craigslist FL for them and it would save you on shipping.

I have one to sell, but shipping it would cost much more than it's worth.

Would you mind sending some photos? I think I can work out the shipping. I have looked at all alternatives. Stand up paddle boards and kayaks just won't work.

Check out www.eatonsurf.com
Sometimes there are old boards up there for $500 or less. I can ship a paddleboard to Hawaii (from CA) for ~$130, so accross the county shouldn't be too bad. Unfortunately, if you want cheap, an old windsurfer is the way to go. With the increase in the popularity of the sport, most 12ft prone boards are going for $800-$1200. |

Re: Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
Mike from Florida freedivers was importing a board like that from
South Africa. They use to have one in the shop for sale. I doubt the price point is what your looking for. Good luck.

Re: Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
I have two. They are Steve Ryan paddle boards. One is from the 70s (in my avatar) and the other from the 60s. If you don't take Dennis's, or find another one let me know.
But as Trimbandit said, it would cost more than they are worth to ship to FL. They are pretty heavy and 20' long. |

Re: Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
Here is the one I'm getting rid of. I'm hoping to get $100 for it.

Re: Paddle Boards for Spearfishing
I've checked into having one or more of these boards shipped to Florida. $1600 per board!! Good grief! I really appreciate the photos and interest. If I am ever in California again, I'm going to round up some of these old boards and haul them home with me.
I remember that they were perfect for diving from the beach and I just can't see that a 'yak would be better. I was in the Bahamas this past weekend and showed the photos to some of the divers there. They really liked the idea of a paddle board with storage. Here's some photos: The photo with the boat was taken at the only Atlantic-side boat ramp within 50 miles. The photo with the divers back shows what he uses for a "boat". It's the bottom 1/3 of a plastic oil drum ballasted with some rocks that he pulls around. He was about 1 mile off shore for 6 hours on the day that I saw him. The last picture is his load of lobster. He'll sell these to a local restaurant for about $100. 20' Paddleboard/Kayak/Dive Board - $50 (Santa Cruz) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 2012-02-13, 12:31PM PST Reply to: 5kj8p-2834723474@sale.craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have a 20' fiberglass dive board for sale. I have caught many halibut off it. It has excellent storage space inside which I used to hold a live bait container and tackle while fishing for flatties. I didn't clean it for the pictures but it cleans up really nicely. Comes with homemade wheels that work great for moving it around. Prefer if you can pickup but if it is local I will deliver for $15. include your phone number in the response and I will give you a call •Location: Santa Cruz •it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests |
