'Bout time! Texas here I come..
Delays, changes in plans, obligations, weddings to attend finally all cleared up, and I leave for Houston June 12th!
Hopefully, There will be a slight detour to shoot some red snapper in 'Bama! Can't wait to meet up with you guys, to slay some fish! I'll bring ya a cooler of beer(if you drink) or packed lunch, and I'm a great deck swabbing rope coiling helper-outer. (Whoops.. just outed myself as yet another boat hitchhiker-mooch.) Anyways, I want to do some jetty shore diving too.. so maybe we can meet up and shoot some stuff. (oh.. anyone know where there is a healthy population of alligator gar? I gotta catch me one o' them buggers!) |

The Trinity River is filled with monster alligator gar and is near Houston, I've also heard of people getting them in Trinity Bay.

Re: 'Bout time! Texas here I come..
I just want to wrassle it!
I do want to try eating it at least once. Where I'm coming from, people freak out over 3' fish (without teeth). We have nothing like them, so I'm excited for something so "exotic". I hear very polarized opinions. Do you make gar balls? Just saw a video where someone marinated in teriyaki sauce. Looked good, but that probably masks the natural flavor. |

We always make "chicharrones" with the meat, here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=FOxx2ZNNUP8
I've also eaten them as "fish steaks" which were pretty much just cutting the fish (Scales and all) into thin steaks (works best with smaller, rounder gar) and frying or baking them. Best way I can explain myself "gar top view"= ( ) cut like this--> ( | | | | ) And these are other ideas: http://discussions.texasbowhunter.co...d.php?t=293533 P.S. The backstraps are amazing! |

Re: 'Bout time! Texas here I come..
Here's the recipe for the first vid:
To fry using 2 kilos of lard is heated to mesquite wood fire, then added the meat and a few minutes on the disk the following ingredients were added that had been previously mixed in the blender: 1/4 cup of beer. 1/4 cup juice of bitter orange . 1/2 cup evaporated milk. 1 tablespoon oregano . 1 tablespoon thyme. 3 cloves of garlic . Takes about 20 minutes. |
