Anyone ever try to spearfish the edge of the reef in the keys? Done some kite fishing out there and have caught blackfin, kingfish, bonita, etc but ive always wondered what it would be like to spearfish there. Id assumer alot of chum and flashers would be needed. Any help is appreciated

Re: The edge
We do it from time to time. In Islamorada the reef drops from 50-60 down to 75-105 depending on where you are. Tons of fish roam that ledge. You can chum bottom fish up, you can run a flasher rig, whatever. Bonito, mackerel, cobia, AP, permit, yellowjacks, and cudas are the most commonly seen fish along the edge. Occasionally Wahoo and Mahi show up. And if you can drop all the way down to where the reef stops and the sand begins you'll find big hogs, grouper, and big muttons. We target a spot that's between 55-70 where the reef stops and the sand begins and always see big muttons.
