Taking a trip to the bahamas this summer. So i'll be looking for locations that I can reach for good spearing by swimming off the beach. I'd like to find reefs at least 300ft off shore. Any suggestions?

Re: Bahamas
Do you know where you are going? The bahamas are a big place.
There are some rules on how close you can dive to shore also. When are you going? the water is pretty cold in the winter..low 70s give us some more details and lots of people here can help you. ![]()

Re: Bahamas
Lived and worked in the Abacos for 5 years. Most of the "environmental injuries" I took care of were tourists who thought it would be fun to swim out to the reef, spear a hogfish and swim back. I dive with sharks all the time in Jupiter as my dive buddies know, in the Bahamas however I advise you not to try and make that swim back to the beach with a fish on a stringer or in the water.

Re: Bahamas
You are flying in, and no boat, so you have to be near an airport. You could go to the Abacos and fly into Marsh Harbor and take a boat shuttle over to Green Turtle or Guana or any other island around Marsh Harbor. The reef is right off there. The only problem is the Bahamians use spearguns and hookahs and do a lot of spearing to provide fish for that whole area. We can only use polespears or Hawaiian slings and a snorkel. Plus not so many lobsters and no conchs. Lots of people go to that area and so do cruisers. But it is nice. The best spearing is where there arent many people or places to stay. You would definetly need a boat. As soon as you get a fish, or before, sharks will be right there. Also if you do any chumming, sharks will be there. Not a great place to be without a boat. How will you get your fish back in? You could with a surfboard with a cooler strapped on.
