Big $$$$ Tuna

Saw on the news that a 613 pound bluefin tuna sold for $3.1 million in Japan. That's a very expensive tuna sandwich.

Yes, I saw that too, makes me wonder how much the customers are paying to eat tiny portions of it! Or is it all a bit of "one-upmanship" as chefs/restaurants jostle for attention? Tunas can be "cooked" by the desperate fight they put up when speared, but these fish market Tuna all have their brains and spinal cord destroyed after suddenly being jerked onto the boat. How someone then differentiates which ones are worth "XX" million is a bit of a mystery as bar hidden mercury compounds, fish flesh of any given species looks very similar when you carve them up. Not being a lover of sashimi I can wait to have my fish cooked.

Yen to US Dollars: 1 to 0.0092 cents, but even so a lot of money for a fish.

Well seeing is believing:https://edition.cnn.com/2019/01/05/a...ion/index.html
Self-proclaimed Japanese "Tuna King" and sushi restaurant owner Kiyoshi Kimura paid a record $3.1 million (333.6 million yen) for a giant bluefin tuna at the New Year's auction at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market Saturday.

Big job chopping and carving up one of these!

Great video! You can see how these fish can gobble up a sack of sardines if you provide them and are in a spot where they are prepared to come in. Once the dinner gong goes they are all into it. Note the hydrodynamic shape of their bodies and the trail of cavitation bubbles streaming back from the caudal peduncle ridges either side of their tails as they turn and sprint away. Video speed must be slowed down as they usually move like bullets through the water.
