Re: Always wear two gloves! Video

It will be a sad day when one of those giant reef vacuum cleaners grabs onto your head to get your ears.

I have hade large ones gulp my retracted arms and swim around with me for a second or two in their mouths. I am, to big to swallow and taste like crap, so they have spit me out.

Once when moving some equipment to a new location a GG took offense to the relocation attempts of his house and head butted me and a friend. The head but from one of these creatures is intense to say the least. These fish in the video are only 10 to 15 years in age. They could live to be 35 years in age and grow to 10 ft in length if they are lucky.

In the last few years I have only seen one fish in the 10 ft range. That fish ran from me on sight. It was a impressive creature and I would not venture into its space unless I was planning on killing it.

Several times while scooter solo to the north of Jupiter inlet on remote spots, I have had lager GG in the 400 to 500# range make a dominance run directly at me. I held course but was a little shaken up at how close they closed to me before paralleling me and escorting to the end of their territory. I'am sure other diver are experiencing this also.

I know that as these fish get older and bolder that eventually one of these larger alfas will finish his run on me and make contact.

I'm sure you will get a video if it does occur. I've seen some really large jewfish (400 lb estimates are common now), but I distinctly remember seeing a GIANT jewfish in the gulf in maybe 120 feet or something on some small wreckage.

I looked out in the sand and saw a dark spot, so I ascended 35 feet and wanted to swim horizontal to set up a vertical descent onto this piece of structure. Vis was maybe 40-50 feet.

As I got closer and closer, I realized that there was no structure, the big black spot was a single jewfish, it was EASILY 2 times as large as any jewfish I have ever seen in my life. We have all heard people spout off about jewfish being as big as a VW, but this one really was... maybe 900-1000 or more pounds. It was very shy and moved off before I got very close, but it was incredibly big, maybe even much larger than 1000 lbs.

My one best story and a teaching point here.
A friend had the habit of carrying his stringer of fish snapped to a loop on the underside of the butt of his SeaHornet.
An unseen jew fish sucked onto the stringer of reef fish and bolted.
The force of the attack pulled the screws holding the butt section through the the rear of plastic gun handle, removing the wood and plastic butt as it broke the divers wrist on his shooting hand
If you TRY to take the butt off the gun it requires a mallet and a lot of boiling hot water, or one large jew fish.

Saw a similar Jewfish in the Gulf while diving off Tampa. At first I thought it was a small whale!?

Whe I came within 50' of it, I could see it clearly as a jewfish. I estimated he was bigger than 15' in length and well over 1000 lbs. He was gone as soon as he saw I changed course toward him.

I sent the coordinates into FSU and they said they've had several similar reports.

Bull shit, you have had your share of underwater tongue lashing in your years diving with Mike.

You should all hear how clearly he can talk underwater when a grouper eludes him.
