First fish

Took my 14 year old out to Lake Pontchartrain to see about putting her on a little sheepshead or two. Well after an hour and a half of trying and only seeing little 8 to 10 inch fish she goes down and before I can finish taking a breath....whack!! And I hear the fish is hit. So dear old dad is figuring she got one of those little ones. She comes up and I see this big sucker coming up with her. I'm thinking oh hell yeah!! Ended up weighing 8.4#. Not a bad first fish and one hell of a proud dad!!

Monster sheepshead! Congrats. Yeah, enjoy it while you can. My son used to go with me all the time, now it's like pulling teeth to get him to go. He has "other interests" now .

Re: First fish

That's awesome! That's a hell of a first fish. My daughter is seven, and I'm going to start her out with a pole spear probably around nine or 10. As another member said, way to show her the outdoors instead of instead of iPads and video games etc.

Re: First fish

Nice fish! Brings back memories. That is where I started my spearfishing career in 1968. We used to rent a 12' flatboat with a 4hp motor in Madisonville on the Tchefuncta River. It took us 4 hrs. to make it to the 4 mile hump of the Causeway. If I could stick my arm out and see my fingers, I was going to get some sheepshead. Used a new Voigt (now JBL) sawed off magnum that I bought from Temento's for $25.00. Shot a lot of Sheepshead under the Causeway and the rigs off Bayou Lacombe. Where did you find good enough vis in the lake? Are you going to bring her to the 60' rigs out of Fourchon soon? They are loaded with sheepshead. Few more years and they will all be gone. Save that photo and in 3 more years you can embarrass her with it. Thanks for sharing.

Re: First fish

I find it good all the time by the Hwy 11 bridge. Gotta be there when it is. I'm out there 3 days or more a week. Caught 5' viz that day and once since. I live on a canal right off the lake. 5 minutes from driveway to diving. Boat is in the water. She was so proud. She definitely wants to do more. My 15 year old son has won Jr Division on the LCUDC board the last two years. Football and cheering takes up a lot of their and also my time. Sheepshead in the lake is my and now their get away. Proud of both of them. And not related to diving or extracurriculars....they both have 4.0+ GPA's.

Re: First fish

I need to be persistent with my girls. I've gotten the older two out a couple times but vis was about 2'. If I could get them out on a decent day I think they would be hooked. Can't wait for that proud feeling of watching them land a fish let alone an 8# fish. What is the water temp where you're at? Either pretty warm or making me feel like a little girl, no way I'm diving without a wetsuit!
