Re: 62" Hybrid build

I also routed the roller anchor. I changed the position a little vs my initial idea as I was concerned about removing too much wood close to the C.F tube.
I have also been thinking about rigging lately and want to try for a design that allows either a one stage loading process or a two stage loading for more powerful bands.
so in addition to the roller anchor I am planning to incorporate a hook behind the roller anchor.
will need to take pictures tonight, I forgot last night.

If it was my first time making all these complex cuts I would be using a piece of pine first.

IMO on a roller that long you need to either go two stage or keep one of those load assists on hand. My 49" roller is two stage for loading and to power it down around rocks. I've shot a fee fish in holes that I wouldn't have bothered with if I didn't have the weaker stage available.

Loading the second stage only really adds about 5-10 sec to load time, on a wood roller I don't really see a reason not to go 2 stage. On mine I put a looped tie-in wishbone on the bottom with little spectra/polespear rubber handle loops to grab. It makes it a lot easier.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Thanks Xylophone. On most cuts I used a scrap piece of wood to try first. I don't have a full blank to play with though... partly because I don't own a saw table so have nothing to bring a piece of pine to the right dimensions... I think I would have otherwise.

On the comments you are making on the 2 stages, do you have a picture to share?
My initial thoughts were that I would have 2 differents set.
1) rig 14mm rubbers for easy single stage loading and
2) rig 16mm for 2 stage loading when going for bigger fish. I didn't realize you can power it done by loading only the top one but it makes perfect sense I guess.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

this is the roller anchor I routed last night and the hole for a pin.
I will finish shaping it once I start the overall shaping of the gun.

-by the way I am following a lot of the steps through DM sea's really good pictorial on aoshunspearfishing.com-
I hope I can make guns as nice as that one day!

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Yesterday I started the handle recess. The process is heavily inspired from Gil Gacula's you tube video.
I installed the primary fence, a secondary one, 2 blockers on the secondary fence and then screwed a scrap piece of wood to the teak blank (in a place that will eventually be shaped away)
That way I have 4 constraints that help route very accurately the rectangular shape needed to recess the handle.
That part worked well but I had a few issues with the bit being pulled out of the router and therefore getting depth right was tricky.

I cannot route that deep so I decide to use my hand held drill and hog out a profile that matches the one I made with the masking tape.
I removed the Delrin track before, and you can see the top of the drill actually made it to the track.

what you want to do with a remote trigger - the way you are doing it- is - make it so the trigger can go - just a little bit PAST 90 degrees - then put a screw - so its directly in front of that trigger - then you can adjust the trigger position and sensibility - by tightening - or loosing that screw.
know what I mean?
it's a common technique - even see it in riffe midhandles

Re: 62" Hybrid build

I can see how a screw can adjust sensitivy on a trigger mech ( I have that on one of my air rifles) but don't see how it would play out on the trigger that is actioned by the finger on a midhandle?
If you have time to drop a picture would be great

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Ok guys, so progress as been slow but here are a few updates.
I finished the handle recess. The router was giving me some issues and I was trouble getting the depth right but I got there eventually

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Having recessed the handle I started profiling the blank slightly.I don't have a band saw which would have been the right way to do this so did it as shown on the pictures

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Then I cleaned up the CF barrel as best as I could, sanded where necessary and epoxied in place the open track

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Now, the issue I had been struggling with lately is that the handle is recessed so high that I had concerns the stock would be stong enough at that point of the speargun.

Eventually I decided to be safe and reinforce the speargun with 2 lateral walnut stripes. so I cut 2 walnut stripes, glued them together and then shaped them as one unit. Then I splitted the block and ended up with 2 perfectly identical walnut stripes ready to be glued on.
I epoxied those in place and will give a slight cuttlefish shape to the gun where they are.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Another issue I have had is that I drilled the hole for the release line and pinned it in place, only to release I could no longer remove the trigger mech (the line release prevents it from moving up or down. )

Since I am planning on coating the wooden part of the speargun with epoxy I need access to the trigger mech pocket. I eventually dug out a little channel so I could remove at will the line release pin and therefore remove the trigger mech.

THe picture doesn't show the completed work, but you get the idea...

Re: 62" Hybrid build

I then started shaping the part of the blank between the handle and the butt (not sure of the name). You can see on the picture the push rod canal. Where I had had issues with the 1/4 inch bit and router I have routed out again with a 1/2 inch bit to have cleaner lines.

In the process I realized I might be able to use this 1/2 inch portion to place a lead stripe and help balance the speargun so will try that when I am ready to start balancing.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

These are a few pictures of the walnut stripes I added and how they look as I have begun the shape them.
On the right side where the line release is I have left some material to help guide the line to the line release.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

That's it so far... still a lot of shaping to do. My main pain points right now are figuring out some form of profile to be able to anchor the roller bands and how I will be able to rig a double wrap on a roller hybrid if that is at all possible.

I'll keep you posted in a few weeks when I have made some more progress.
Thanks guys
