Re: Hurricane Gustav
Just a note; we on the east coast have you guys in our thoughts and prayers as gustav heads your way. Katrina survivors know the dismay of the aftermath of such a storm.
Don't take any chances and stay safe then ask for help we are here.

Re: Hurricane Gustav
Best wishes. Get out of there everyone.
Something to cheer you up. May your evacuation center be run by the same folks who ran the San Diego one last year during the fire. We had gourmet catered food and massages and yoga lessons |

Re: Hurricane Gustav
Anybody heard any news on whether or not the storm surge over-topped the levees in Plaquemines parish? I'm guessing that they did not based on what the weather channel was predicting for the area, but one of them could have collapsed. I hope that everyone is ok down there.

Re: Hurricane Gustav
Extensive coverage on NBC indicates that you guys dodged a big bullet. Glad the damage was not as bad as expected. The levies held up and no major breeches happened. The Army Corp is still strenthening the levies and is planning to be completed by 2012. They will be built to a 100 year standard (whatever that is) according to Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff is what I just heard on NBC.

Re: Hurricane Gustav
MS coast had minor damage and some flooding, with the worst flooding being onthe west end of Hancock County, as usual.
Here we were without power for 12 hours, and water came back on this AM. Now it's down to clean-up. My biggest job will be splitting and stacking the firewood from the 2 oaks I have on the yard.

Re: Hurricane Gustav
The term "100-year flood" is used in an attempt to simplify the definition of a flood that statistically has a 1-percent chance of occurring in any given year. Likewise, the term "100-year storm" is used to define a rainfall event that statistically has this same 1-percent chance of occurring. In other words, over the course of 1 million years, these events would be expected to occur 10,000 times. But, just because it rained 10 inches in one day last year doesn't mean it can't rain 10 inches in one day again this year.

Re: Hurricane Gustav
Good news in LA...
I just talked to Dave Dauzat in Metairie, LA just a few miles west of New Orleans, and he and all the Hell Divers he's talked to have had mostly nothing but some yard clean up to do. They've been having bar-b-ques on the front porch. No power still, but everybody's on generators. Cell phones came back on but internet is still down for many. I dove the HDR with Dave out of Houma, LA 2 years back... now that area is probably another story. Chad

Re: Hurricane Gustav
I'm in Ascension Parish, which is south of Baton Rouge, but north of New Orleans. No significant damage, but current guestimate for getting the power back on is 2-4 weeks.
Still have internet whenever I power up the generator though! |

Re: Hurricane Gustav
Just left my house on the lake in Slidell....we had about 5 feet above normal and very minimal water in my shed. The street blocked all the debris from coming on my side so it only took about 30 minutes to clean up. The other side of the street and canal were trashed with marsh grass and debris.
