Hope to make my own 70cm Predator Pro into something as powerful as an 80+, without much work / effort and keeping the barrel short for low-vis freshwater. Of course... With that stronger trigger mech, I'd then be tempted to later add their roller muzzle for one hell of a weapon! THEN, I'd need another 70cm gun to fulfill the purpose of my original one that I bastardized so much! LOL

Re: Mako 70cm predator pro 2nd gen
This is some great info as I would love to upgrade the mechs on my predator pros. Will I then need a longer shaft?
Thanks from Ecuador, Mike

Re: Mako 70cm predator pro 2nd gen
Adding a roller muzzle to a 70cm gun is like installing mud tires on a SMART car...
The roller muzzle will allow you to store more energy in the same length gun. For those with physics classes too long ago, the energy is a function of the force required to stretch the bands, and the distance they are stretched. A 5/8 bands that is stretched 350% requires the same force, no matter if it is a 10" band stretched to 35" or if it is a 20" band stretched to 70". The pressure (force) on the trigger will be the same. However the energy stored by the longer band will be bigger than the energy stored by the shorter band. When you fire the gun, it is the energy that moves the shaft and gives the gun a recoil. The 70cm gun usually has a light shaft. Putting too much energy into that shaft will force the shaft to move "too fast" through the water, and that is very inefficient. Fast moving shafts loose energy very fast, as the loss of energy is a function of the square speed. Also the 70cm gun is usually a light gun, and the higher energy stored in the bands will give you a lot of recoil. If you want to have a "mule" that is 70cm yet packs a punch, you have to start with a platform (gun) that can absorb that energy - something like the Riffe Metal Tech #1. It is the equivalent of a 70cm gun, but 3 times heavier than a 70cm euro and can shoot very heavy shafts. A heavy shaft will absorb the band energy, move slower through the water, but move further and have more energy left at impact to go through the fish. With all this being said, tinkering is fun ... I would love to see somebody coming up with a roller muzzle for the Metal Tech, or for the Wong Ono, or a bolt-on for the Ulusub... Stefan |

Re: Mako 70cm predator pro 2nd gen
I already have 2x16mm bands on it with a 6.5mm shaft, so it moves pretty good.
I think the extra pull of a reverse mech and a second wrap should be enough, realistically. Easier to de-power as well for rocky shots.

Mako 70cm predator pro 2nd gen
After messing about with the 70cm, I've found that a single 16mm band (mean green) at around 340% was optimal for accuracy for me and pulled 2 wraps strongly. Any more than 340% on the green rubber lead to too much recoil.
The stock 2 bands are fairly loose at the soft setting that it comes with, but I found them too much when both loaded for good accuracy. Also, just 1 band at the stock long length on the far hole and back on the rear shark fin is also not strong enough for 2-wraps or good penetration / punch. I'm currently installing a roller head on it and will report back. The goal is lots of punch and a tug at the end of 2-wraps with quarter-sized grouping at 12'

^ I could make you a fart gun that could do that all day long? Non existent recoil and about a 15 second reload time x

Just not feeling the fart guns. I haven't found liking the aiming of them with the thick barrel and want to have precision in case I see a freshwater perch that looks of edible size. 3.5m from the tip of the shaft is as much as I need and if I can keep the precision... I'd be happy. I'm super selective when I spearfish, so a quick reload time isn't generally something I need (I know I'll regret saying this), as I take my time and dispatch the fish if still moving and string it up. I'm not a tournament Spearo or into eradicating a local population. Just trying to get this little 70cm to be agile, precise and powerful without recoil. You know... holy grail type stuff...

Re: Mako 70cm predator pro 2nd gen
We'll see how / if everything works together as a system tomorrow in the pool for target practice.

Mako 70cm predator pro 2nd gen
Tested it out tonight in my 55* pool in the dark / rain with the light on.
On the first shark fin, it's quarter sized grouping (heartbeat error) at 9' from spear tip with a good pull at the end of the line. That's 12' from the handle and about 14' from my head which is about as good as vis gets where this gun is designed for in green freshwater. No significant recoil and it makes an awesome sound! "THWUNK!" On the far back shark fin, there is more recoil and in this crazy 7mm wetsuit with pre-curved arms, I can't even keep my arm 100% straight. LOL. I'll have to try again in my 5mm. I was within a 4" grouping without being able to keep my arm straight at 12' from spear tip and not having enough weight to stay down and anchored for the shot properly had me bobbing around (and that was with 25 lbs on!) On the 70cm gun I used 26" of 16mm mean green rubber and then gave it 15cm (6") of preload. The bands don't flutter when moving it laterally / tracking. AMAZING for a first crack at it! I'm very happy with the results so far. Thanks to KYTony for all of his help with the bridle setup and words of wisdom from his experience to help with my first crack at a roller "build" / piece-together.
