Hogfish populations

I'm curious if anyone has noticed an increase in the population or average size of Hogs since the newer regulations and closed season cam into effect.

Re: Hogfish populations

1000%. All my spots are full of hogs. Before the regulation it would be rare to see any. I might take one or two legal ones per trip. Now I see 12-14 inches by the schools almost. It's amazing how they have bounced back. Glad they increased the size minimum and bag limit! Now my kids in (20 years) will be able to spear some!

Re: Hogfish populations

Maybe in areas with extreme fishing pressure. Off key west I haven’t seen much of a difference especially out west of key west. I’ve actually never seen so few hog even in areas where I used to see them in giant schools just a few years ago. With a 25 pound trip limit I never target them anymore and rarely even shoot the legal ones I see.

Re: Hogfish populations

so I went diving today and saw a lot of big hogs. Got my limit in about 3 minutes when a school of 5 pounders rolled in on the first dive of the day. Maybe I take back what I said lol

Have been seeing some absolute units during the end of lobster season.
