Going beach camping, how can I prevent spear rust?

I've had to completely sand down my spear before, so it has no anti-rust coating and it rusts easy. After each trip I thoroughly wash it with fresh water and after a few hours drying I spray it really good with Sonax (it's like WD-40). It still gets a tiny bit of rust, mainly on the tip, but for the most part my method works fine.

I'm going beach camping for a week and I'll be spearing every day. We're bringing fresh water, but I need to be conservative with it. Is my usual routine the best thing to do? I can't wash it as thoroughly with fresh water as I usually do, but I'll try to get the salt off. After the fresh water wash, should I just drench it in Sonax? Does it need to be completely dry for the Sonax to prevent rust? Is some type of oil better than Sonax?

Thanks

I dont know what tools you have, but a highly polished shaft doesnt rust as easily, it's easier to find if your free shafting, and the slip ring slides nicer if your line shafting.
Whey I say polished, I mean to look like chrome.

Rub the spear with a piece of clean cloth doubled over to increase its thickness and then follow up with another piece with light oil on it. The first absorbs any water and the second applies a thin coat of oil which evaporates off. Or you can put the WD40 equivalent on the second cloth. Remove any detachable tip to clean the screw threads.

Rust can pit the shaft and grow in places, which is bad news for a line slide if one is used. A rusty shaft will be slowed in the water, however this is distinct from an evenly rusted shaft that has a smooth finish as in a "blued" firearm achieved by rubbing down with wet and dry paper and oiling the oxide coating.

This can work OK, but you have to maintain the finish, whereas stopping the rust in the first place is the best option. My "browned" shafts started life as being cadmium plated, but the coating gets used up and the shaft develops rust spots. Today spring stainless steel is a great advantage, but even it can develop rust specks if left unwashed.

Ospho rust inhibitor in a travel size spray bottle.

I have done this type of trip several times. Wipe with a dry cloth, let dry a bit, and then wipe with cloth or paper towel with canola oil.

I am not a fan of putting any kind of solvent like wd40 on my shafts. Rather use something actually edible. I also make sure to have my tetanus shot up to date...

RELAX.

You are going on a camping trip.

Worry about this later.

RELAX.

KISS PRINCIPLE if you must play with your shaft. Use whatever cooking oil you can get ahold of and wipe it down in the evening.

Bring your girl friend, and put her in charge of taking care of your shaft.

I would promptly abort this camping trip. It's not worth getting rust on your spear shaft.
