Re: ‘Sharkwater’ filmmaker Rob Stewart goes missing in the Keys on 1-31-17

There are more dive details here:

Sister of Canadian filmmaker Rob Stewart, missing after Florida dive, says time is 'critical'

FROM THE ARTICLE

Stewart "resurfaced at the end of the dive, and as the boat was turning around to pick him up, he went back under — and was not seen again," Weaver said.

It's not immediately clear what caused Stewart to go back under water, but his sister said it was a "particularly difficult" dive, going to a depth of nearly 70 metres.

She said her brother may have lost consciousness after doing a third dive that day.

The local take on it...which get updated regularly as it develops..

Seems like he may have been rebreather-poisoned, whatever the tech term for that is. A lot of people go down with those things. I am scuba but know nothing about them.

Hope they find him and he's ok. Don't like the part about surfacing and then re-submerging.

Mr Stewart was diving about six miles off the coast of Islamorada, in the Florida Keys, according to his friends.

The latest - new and deeper.

Stewart, an experienced diver who is best known for his award-winning 2006 documentary Sharkwater, went missing around 5 p.m. after resurfacing from a dive with two other companions.

He was using a new rebreathing system at the time and was diving “deeper than he’s gone before,” according to Tyler MacLeod, a close friend of the Toronto native.

Re: ‘Sharkwater’ filmmaker Rob Stewart goes missing in the Keys on 1-31-17

Capt. Jeffrey Janszen, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West, confirmed a Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department dive team found Stewart about 300 feet from his last known position.

“He was very close to where he disappeared,” Janszen said.

A sad ending to this incident. Am glad his body was found, some small comfort to his family.

RIP. It really hurts to look at all the "RIP" threads on spearboard just scrolling down the main page. My condolences to the family and everyone involved in this tragedy.

Here is a very informative article on what may have happened.

What Happened to Rob Stewart?

The director of the acclaimed documentary 'Sharkwater' disappeared mysteriously after a deep dive off the coast of Key Largo on Tuesday. For 72 hours, crews scoured the ocean. On Friday, shortly after the search for Stewart was suspended, divers found his body on the bottom of the ocean floor.

Re: RIP ‘Sharkwater’ filmmaker Rob Stewart goes missing in the Keys on 1-31-17

At the risk of sounding ignorant here: the article read that the crew turned their back on him for one second to get some oxygen, did he have a buddy with him, next to him, near him? It makes me rethink the way we dive on many boats, how we exit the water, who watches out for who...REGARDLESS of experience level...again at the risk of sounding ignorant, I as a Toronto native am even more saddened that this may have been easily prevented??? Kind of at a,loss here with this one...prayers and thoughts to the family and friends...a big loss for all of us who share his passion for protection and awqreness
