1 vs. 2 Piece Wetsuit

I have never bought a wetsuit before and was thinking about getting one and I noticed that the two piece wetsuits are far more expensive than the one piece. I will be using the wetsuit for freediving and spearfishing so I want a wetsuit that can give me maxium mobility. Anybody know the difference between the two?

Re: 1 vs. 2 Piece Wetsuit

The one piece suits typically have a zipper in the back. The zippers leak. Typically the outside and inside of the suit is covered with a fabric material. The suits do not have a hood.

I love a 2 mm one piece suit for freediving and scuba in S florida when the water and air are warm. Say 80 degrees plus. When it gets a little cooler, you can add a hood or even a hooded vest, but these suits are just not designed to be very warm..

If you want to be able to comfortably freedive all winter in south Florida, you will want a 3 (or 3.5 mm) two piece freedive suit. They have no zipper, an attached hood and put two layers of rubber over your midesection (or entire chest) depending on the pants. Typically these suits have smooth rubber inside which reduces water flow through the suit. all this adds up to a suit that seals well, leaks little and provides very good thermal protection without too much thick rubber and buoyancy.

It's funny you mention this because I've never dove a two piece that doesn't leak between the layers. It might be by body type (tall and skinny) that causes that though.

If you're going to freedive, get a 2 Pc. open cell hooded wetsuit.

I also own a 2 pc. hooded rashguard and depending on water temperature, I combine the neoprene top with the lycra pants or use a full 3 mm wetsuit during the colder season, or the full lycra wetsuit during summer.

Might be. But have you tried a REAL freediving wetsuit? I mean, an open cell interior one? If it is the right size, it shouldn't leak. One tip: fold the upeer part of your pants a couple inches to expose the open cell neoprene. It will make a seal against the top.

Even when scuba diving, I still prefer a 2 piece suit.

Also, Its gotta be camo, or else the fish will be able to see you!

No, because I can't rent them in Oregon to try them out.

That's a good tip on the seal though. I'll give that one a try if I ever feel like there is a gap (if I ever get into a proper freedive wetsuit).

You won't regret. After you try an open cell wetsuit, you will never wear a doble lined one again. It's day and night.

Re: 1 vs. 2 Piece Wetsuit

Marco is absolutely correct. It's a night and day difference. My 5mm freediving suit is as warm as my old 7mm Scuba suit(lined inside).

That's even though my scuba suit was custom fit, and my 5mm is a Mako. (not custom fit).

My suit could stand to be taken in at the waist in the small of my back, but aside from that, there is very little circulation of water. As it stands, we were diving in 34 F water for a bit over 2 hours before we got too cold to keep spearing.

no you have to get a suit that hides your body's electromagnetic signals! like the faraday cage suit xcel makes!

still dont understand that btw.. the only thing thats a better electromagnetic insulator than neoprene is rubber.
