Reels for a new guy!

Hey guys, I was wondering if there is a reel out there that has a locking feature on it? Or perhaps they all do I'm just getting into spearfishing. I mostly scuba dive so I don't want to have a reel spooling out while I'm scuba diving, but would like to have one for when I freedive on occasion. Or do I just need to buy another gun and outfit it with a reel for when I freedive?

You might want to take a look at our reels. They can be mounted to basically any speargun by use of either a curved mount (for a circular barrel) or a flat mount for a wood gun. Once the base plate is installed on the gun, it takes only a few moments to slide the reel itself, on or off the gun. You can buy multiple mounts (for a few dollars each) which would allow you to mount or dismount the reel on several guns.. as conditions dictate.

Also, the reel has a drag which you could be set very tight, if that was desired for scuba diving.

Re: Reels for a new guy!

look to get a reel with a Stainless Steel mounting bracket as they are ultimately stronger and you can lock-down the drag a little better. The standard plastic dove-tail mounting bracket fits most reels as well.

Re: Reels for a new guy!

Here is some un-biased opinion:
with a lot of reels the problem is that the drag comes loose, or doesn't stay in the exact position you put it, especially when you set it to very little drag. When you lock them they all more or less stay, but you want a reel that stays on loose drag but does't completely come off.
The one that has worked best for me is the "Aussie Reel" from Barry Paxman http://www.aussiereels.com/products.html

Check this for proof of capability:http://www.spearboard.com/showthread...=salty+sea+dog

they have a version each for wood or railguns.
I also saw the ulusub reels and they look very good, I ordered one, but not tested yet.
cheers

So that is what that line anchor is for
i use the mako reel and am happy with it. for you the easiest would be to simply pull the reel off when scuba diving.

Thanks for all the input guys, I really like the Mako reels, they look as if they'll do exactly what I need mine to do!
