Ulua or Papio

One of our team divers filmed this on a recent dive, I guess he couldn't figure out if he was shooting at a papio or an ulua. In Hawaii the Giant Trevally under 10 pounds is called a Papio while one over 10 pounds is generally called an ulua so confusion is bound to happen when there are so many targets:

Re: Ulua or Papio

im a dumb guy so a little schooling is in order....i thought that papio are blue fin trevally? Without better color, I cant tell if the small ones are BFT. However they look to be a school of smaller GTs on first glance. I do know without question that the larger single guy near the end is 100% a GT. Great video I saw it on youtube the other day.

Re: Ulua or Papio

Here's a more official def of omilu (blue fin trevally), and papio (juvenile trevally).

papio (pah-PEE-o)
any young fish of the trevally or jack family; a trevally caught inshore and/or weighs less than 10 lbs.; a major local food fish.
papio 'aukea (pah-PEE-oh ow-KAY-ah)
(lit: white papio) a papio of the Giant trevally (G.T.) specie

'omilu
(lit: "blue") papio of the bluefin trevally species; has blue fins & blue spots on sides and back, rarely gets over about 12 lbs.

And a less official, BI boy's def:
For me and my cousins we always called the small omilus we poked with three prongs and caught in lay nets on inside reef areas papio as they were obviously very young and small, but with much the same coloring. We always refer to Omilu as the bigger blue fin trevallies you went after with guns and that could spool a line or thrash your shaft in the holes.

Probably doesn't clear up your confusion but that's how I divide the two.

The vid looks like omilu, but small kine, adding to your question.

Re: Ulua or Papio

There is no such animal as white or black Giant Trevally. There is only one type and that is GT. Dont believe me check your fish books.

Thanks for the omilu schooling i know that and forgot

there are black trevalies but they are totally different.

the different colors of GT white or black happen because of mood or reproduction

Re: Ulua or Papio

After playing footage again on a bigger screen than my phone I agree they are NOT omilu. Omilu look almost green with blue fin and spots when swimming. These lacked the coloring I'm accustomed to seeing when stalking omilu. So I'm going to say juvenile ulua...

Exactly,

This is a black Ulua. or Caranx lugubris

Different fish from a white ulua(Giant Trevally) or Caranx ignobilis. We do get whites that are very dark because of mood or surroundings but this is not the same fish....

What about the Hybrids, what's the name for them? I was told there isn't a genes name yet.

There have been a few fish shot that are clearly hybrids in the last few years. I know Daryl shot one last year and the folks at Bishop said it was definitely a cross from the photos...

How was that black? Shot or caught? Thats a record breaker right there if it was shot.
